Job Description

Purpose
The purpose of the HSLP Coordinator role is to carry out the requirements of the Integrated and Health Safety and Loss Prevention Management Systems for the Akyem operation.

Key Accountabilities


Position Specific

  • Develop and administer Newmont programs to prevent accidents/incidents and loss due to operating activities at Akyem.
  • Assist line management to develop and maintain a culture of “Safe Production and Zero Harm”.  Provide advice and assistance to line management regarding hazard identification, risk management, safety rules, regulations, trends, HSLP systems, statistics, compliance, etc.
  • Participate in and lead accident/incident investigations to determine root causes and identify corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Conduct HSLP inspections, observations and audits. Prepare reports and close out corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Attend safety meetings and assist line management to present safety information.
  • Develop procedures and systems to meet Akyem HSLP Management Operating System requirements.
  • Provide visible and felt leadership in the field and indeed with all HSLP related activities.
  • Monitor lead and lag HSLP indicators and produce reports and presentations as required.
  • Ensure compliance to the Integrated Management System and HSLP Management Operating System and participate in system audits and continuous improvement requirements.
General
  • Champion the leadership behaviours that continuously support, promote and embrace the Newmont Vision, Values and Purpose statement.
  • Carry out all duties in a manner that minimises the risk and maintains a safe working environment for all personnel including contractors and visitors.
  • Demonstrate effective performance in achieving or exceeding agreed HSLP goals in support of the department, site and company.
  • Train, coach, motivate and positively influence the safe productive improvement of HSLP processes and practices at Akyem and in our community.
  • Actively maintain knowledge of and compliance with all company policies, procedures and safe work practices detailed in the Site Integrated Management System, Standard Operating Procedures, Ghana Government Regulations and other documents that may be appropriate at Akyem.
  • Maintain awareness and understanding of Newmont’s Environmental and Social Responsibility Policy and the operation’s ESR Statement of Commitment.
  • Identify and report HSLP, Environmental and Community hazards. Participate in the control of these hazards where appropriate.
  • Understand the environmental impact of work activities, the environmental requirements of Standard Operating Procedures and the relevant elements of the management system (IMS) that applies to the role of HSLP Coordinator.
  • Support the department in the administration of the HSLP business process databases.
  • Respect and observe the rights of local communities.
  • Treat all employees, contractors and visitors with respect and communicate with them in an open and honest way.
  • Other duties as required.
Constraints, Framework & Boundaries
This position operates under the guidance of the HSLP Manager as well as the frameworks and procedures/protocols/licences established by the relevant Government Department, Newmont Golden Ridge Ltd and its parent.

Challenges
The position requires excellent communication and safety leadership skills and the ability to actively engage with managers, supervisors, line supervisors, employees, contractors and visitors in the promotion of health safety and loss prevention activities and systems.

Working Conditions/Environment
This is a HSLP professional position and the successful applicant must be able to present to work for business needs at any time.

Working Relationships

Internal
  • Reports directly to the HSLP Superintendent.
  • The position directly supports the HSLP Manager.
  • The position supports the Site Leadership Team and other site personnel.
  • The role necessitates a close working relationship with other HSLP team members.
External
  • The position is an active member of the broader Newmont team and must foster friendly and professional working relationships with all internal and external contacts. External contacts include Consultants, Contractors and Government Agencies.
  • External support resources include the HSLP Group Executive, HSLP Global Team and Safety professionals at other Newmont operations.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Degree or Graduate Diploma in Health, Safety and Loss Prevention.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in working in the health and safety field in an extractive industry
  • Thorough understanding of Safety Management Systems.
  • Sound knowledge of risk management and loss prevention processes.
  • Accident/incident investigation experience.
  • Auditing, training and first aid qualifications desirable.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Strong presentation, organizational and communication skills
  • Competent in MS Office software.
  • Current Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislative requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse work group.
