Job Description

A cartoonist combines writing and drawing to convey humor and tell stories about current events, recent trends, made-up worlds and even everyday life situations. In general, cartoonists do not need formal education, however some postsecondary training may be an added advantage: Job schedule include the following:

• Sketch and submit cartoon or animation for approval.
• Develop personal ideas for cartoons, comic strips, or animations, or reads written material to develop ideas.
• Make changes and corrections to cartoon, comic strip, or animation as necessary.
• Create and prepare sketches and model drawings of characters, providing details from memory, live models, manufactured products, or reference material.
• Render sequential drawings of characters or other subject material which when photographed and projected at specific speed becomes animated.
• Develop color patterns and moods and paints background layouts to dramatize action for animated cartoon scenes.
• Discuss ideas for cartoons, comic strips, or animations with editor or publisher's representative.
• Label each section with designated colors when colors are used.

Required Skills or Experience

Technically, there are no strict education requirements for this job. Generally, cartoonists are gifted artists. Thus It should be noted that academic qualifications are less important than attitude and ability.
