  • Perseus Mining is a dual listed (Australia, Toronto) gold miner and explorer focused on the West African region. 
  • Perseus Mining (Ghana) Limited (PMGL) has recently commissioned the world-class Edikan gold project in the Western Region of Ghana. 
  • Edikan Gold Mine (EGM) has a current mining reserve of 3.3M oz of gold from a resource base of 4.3M oz.
  • The Edikan processing facility has been designed as a 5.5Mtpa processing facility with the ability to expand this to 7.9Mtpa in the future. The plant is capable of producing at a rate of 220-270,OOOoz gold per annum. 

Job Description

Purpose of Role:

To give forceful direction and guidance on OHS matters in accordance with the Minerals and Mining Acts, best practice and all other related legal guidelines. The OHS Manager is a driver of cultural change within the workplace which aims to ensure employees understand theirs and the Company'S responsibilities with respect to occupation health, hygiene and safety. The OHS Manager will ensure that all regulatory requirements with respect to safety on the mine site are met through developing systems and procedures which Departmental Managers are charged with applying as well as directly managing aspects of these. 
Key Responsibilities 

  • Develop and implement OHS Policies and Procedures in accordance with Minerals and Mining Acts and other related legal frame work. 
  • Ensure OHS Policies are displayed, communicated, understood and complied by the entire workforce, sub- contractors and visitors. 
  • Establish and enforce a culture of health and safety within the organisation and maintain a safe workplace. 
  • Train, develop and coach employees on health and safety and accident prevention matters 
  • Consistently evaluate practices, procedures and inspect facilities, equipment, machinery to assess risk and adherence to the Iaw. 
  • Work with other Department Managers to capture their specific department OHS hazards, assist in the assessment of risk and identification of risk controls and document the outcomes. 
  • Ensure timely submission of Monthly Regulatory Returns to government agencies. 
  • Ensure participation of all departments and contractors during emergency response exercises 
  • Conduct at least one work area emergency evacuation exercise each month. 
  • Encourage and contract personnel to formally report all hazards, incident and near miss events. 
  • Analyse incident trends monthly and report any trends in the site monthly report 
  • Ensure the OHS department conduct 100% of planned 
  • Workplace Inspections each month and ensure findings are formally documented and communicated to relevant stakeholders. 
  • Ensure that random alcohol testing is conducted on an area or section at least once per week. 
  • Lead the site implementation of PMGL Occupational Health and Safety management system standards. 
  • Assist department managers in incorporating occupational health and safety into their operational activities through the use of the OHS department management tools such as Workplace Inspections and Systems Audits, 
  • Lead the application of Perseus Mining risk management processes, including Hazard 10, Job Safety Analyses, Formal Qualitative Risk Assessments, 
  • Ensure incident/accident investigations are completed to an acceptable standard through critical review of causes, outcomes and proposed corrective actions. 
  • Monitor the performance of the site medical services provider and work with the contractor to deliver excellent medical services to PMGL and its contractors 
  • Review and provide expert comment on all OHS statistics maintained by the department. 
  • Ensure that the department is fully engaged in the development and delivery of key safety training requirements.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Degree in safety management or relevant field. Masters degree will be an added advantage 
  • Must have Health. Safety and Environment Manager's 
  • Certificate of Competency from the Ghana Mineral's Commission 
  • Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines 
  • Experience of implementing safety systems to international standards 
  • Excellent knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment 
  • Excellent organizational and motivational skills 
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability 
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities 
  • Zeal and energy to drive and embed change 
  • Minimum of 10 years in mine site safety roles, preferably 5 years in Manager or Superintendent role.
