Job Description

Our company is a Non-Bank Financial Institution (NBFI) and a subsidiary of a multinational company. The company seeks to employ an Insurance Manager.

Location:  Accra

Purpose of the Job
The primary objective of this role is to take ownership of the day-to-day operations in Bayport’s insurance operations, and to establish a solid foundation for the rapid and broad expansion of the insurance solution and business. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that underwriting policies processes and standards are developed, implemented and adhered to, which include  
  • the incorporation of insurance program into the accounting and financial systems; 
  • administrative tasks, such as maintaining records and handling policy renewals;
  • effective customer service and relations to deliver customer service satisfaction; 
  • client engagement to obtain and provide information when claims are made on a policy. 
  • Develop and deploy best practices products and processes across the group, addressing 
  • effective cost control and governance compliance;
  • people practices in line with organizational guidelines, policies, culture and values;
  • maintenance of underwriting standards and provision of quality client and broker service;
  • monitoring of insurance claims to ensure they are settled equitably for both the client and the insurer. 
  • Actively contribute to the development of the insurance business across all the Bayport operations by introducing new products, partnerships, business models, etc. 
  • Customize insurance programs to suit individual customers, often covering a variety of risks;
  • Explain features, advantages and disadvantages of various policies to promote sale of insurance plans; 
  • Call on policyholders to deliver and explain policy, to analyse insurance program and suggest additions or changes, or to change beneficiaries;
  • Select company that offers type of coverage requested by client to underwrite policy. 
  • Develop the relevant product and cost models for all products and program
  • Calculate premiums, claim ratios and establish payment methods
  • Develop and maintain the optimal partner relationships at group and operations levels 
  • Continuously evaluate the value add and associated costs of existing and potential partners across the full insurance value chain
  • Recommend and drive changes to partnership arrangements
  • Retain ownership of the business and operational side of the relevant insurance IT systems, including;
  • Ensure proper business specifications of relevant insurance IT solution.

Required Skills or Experience

Industry Experience

  • At least 5 years’ experience in the insurance industry, at least two at supervisory level
  • A sound understanding of basic policy pricing and covers
  • A sound understanding of claims management processes
  • Experience in insurance product development would be beneficial
  • A good level of understanding of MIS and BI requirements
  • Understanding of operational requirements for an insurance IT software

Education, skills and specialist knowledge required

  • Postgraduate degree in Economics, Finance or similar discipline. 
  • Recognized intermediate or advanced insurance qualification

General professional experience 

  • Experience with, and understanding of, the life insurance landscape, including regulation, legislation and product offerings.
  • Strong understanding of insurance customer and market dynamics and requirements in a life insurance environment.
  • Proven leadership qualities with the ability to create, develop and drive a successful origination and sales team.
  • The person has experience in general management and has been measured on business unit results, and not just specific functional results.
