Job Description

  • Provide outpatients / emergency care and refer appropriately
  • Assess and implement management plans for patients
  • Undertake out-of-hours duties as specified by head of unit/dept
  • Perform surgical operations / clinical procedures within competency
  • Assist specialists in major surgical operations
  • Appropriately refer patients beyond competency

COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONS

  • Maintain effective communication with work colleagues, other health workers, patients/ clients and visitors
  • Participate in multi-professional meetings and conferences as required.
  • Attend and contribute at staff meetings
  • Promote and safeguard the interest and well-being of patients at all times
  • Efficiently act in a team with other health workers
  • Always act in a dignified and responsible manner towards patients/clients, visitors and colleagues.

PERSONAL AND PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop and maintain continuing personal development to meet the challenging
  • demands in the area of clinical services
  • Monitor own performance against agreed objectives and standards
  • Keep up to date on the job related issues as appropriate
  • Undertake /participate in staff appraisal and personal attributes for all staff
  • Act as a role model in professional and personal attributes for all staff
  • Participate in the training of junior health professionals and other health workers
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff and act as preceptor (a teacher/instructor)
  • Assist in the maintenance and development of team morale and be supportive to all staff
  • Contribute to continuing professional development (CPD) of staff
  • Keep log of own performance and in-service training log for purposes of appraisal.

MANAGEMENT

  • Ensure efficient management of resources under care
  • Promote the development and maintenance of teamwork
  • Participate in roster planning
  • Promote a positive image of the Centre
  • Participate in any cost operative measures
  • Devise improved job methods for increasing efficiency
  • Participate in maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records in accordance to laid down policy.

RESEARCH

  • Conduct /participate in operational research

HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take care of own safety and others who may be affected by your actions or omissions
  • Comply with existing health and safety policies and procedures of RMC

QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Adhere to Quality Assurance policy and guideline
  • Keep up-to-date with quality activities against quality standards, anticipating
  • factors that may reduce quality and taking effective action to address them

FURTHER INFORMATION

  • The post holder must at all times :
  • Work in accordance with The Centre’s code of professional conduct and disciplinary procedures
  • Strictly adhere to the provisions of the patient’s charter
  • Participate in National Health Programmes
  • Provide support and information to patients / relatives as and when necessary
  • Perform bedside laboratory investigations
  • Conduct / participate in :
  • Ward rounds
  • Clinical meetings
  • Morbidity / mortality meetings
  • Clinic –pathological conferences
  • General staff meetings
  • Constantly update knowledge
  • Provide in-patient care
  • Accurately and legibly record patients’ care and management packages
  • Participate in district health programmes as and when required.

  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Supervisory /Team leader experience
  • Experience of managing and organising own workload
  • Involvement in peer reviews
  • Research experience

  • Surgical skills
  • Advanced life support / resuscitation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, report writing and presentation skills
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to demonstrate and participate in effective team work
  • Ability to relate to people from differing backgrounds
  • Working knowledge in computer application
  • Supervisory skills, ability to work under pressure, initiate and maintain clear, concise documentation

  • Ability to prioritise activities and react quickly and react to changes in requirements

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of the (GHS) Patient’s Charter
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of quality assurance issues
  • Broad knowledge of clinical protocols
  • Broad knowledge of MOH/GHS policies and operating procedures
  • Broad knowledge of health and management related issues
