Job Purpose

To manage, direct and develop strategies, policies, procedures and practices in line with best practice and group requirements in all aspects of the human resources function (including but not limited to industrial relations, learning and development, remuneration and benefits, administration and community relations / CSR) to ensure the achievement of corporate goals and objectives for sustained business operations and growth within the region.

The principal accountabilities of the successful applicant will include:

  • To manage, direct and develop efficiently the HR and administration function including but not limited to policies relating to recruitment, expatriate contracts and permits, retention, job performance, etc. to ensure best practices and alignment with group requirements.
  • To manage, direct and develop appropriate remuneration practices/standards in consultation with the executive (including medical and retirement benefits, and reward and recognition) to ensure best practices and compatibility with group requirements.
  • To manage, direct and develop performance management, training and development practices in line with career development and succession plans to ensure availability of core skills for business growth.
  • To undertake benchmarking within country/region to advise/guide senior management to ensure best practices in HR service delivery.
  • To manage, direct and develop the industrial/labour relations between the Company and the relevant Unions including salary and benefits negotiations to ensure a harmonious work environment to facilitate continuous production.
  • To ensure good governance and effective controls are implemented in the available Human Resource and Payroll Information Systems / technology.  This includes ensuring compliance with in-country legislation in all dimensions of function in order to reduce risks and liabilities to Company and assisting with all internal and external audit activities that are relevant to HR and ensure the closure of actions.
  • To advise, coach and guide senior management and supervisors in the application of industrial relations and HR standards and practices at the workplace to ensure a highly motivated and disciplined workforce within country/region.
  • To manage, direct and develop effective relations with key public and private stakeholders to ensure effective execution of function.
  • To manage and co-ordinate all Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects within country/region to ensure the maintenance of goodwill and collaboration within catchment communities and in keeping with best practice.
  • Produce relevant management reports on key areas as required.
  • To assist in budgeting process and efficiently manage cost in functional area as required to ensure optimum growth and margins.
  • To manage, lead and develop direct reports to ensure career growth and development and the delivery of professional HR and administration services across the Company in line with best practice.

Required Skills or Experience

Qualifications, Experiences & Competencies

  • Minimum of university degree or equivalent in relevant discipline (Business Administration, HR Management, Industrial Psychology, Social Sciences).
  • Minimum of 5 years HR generalist leadership experience in a labour intensive environment (preferably in the mining, explosives or manufacturing industry).  
  • Professional qualification/training in HR and a member of a recognized HR professional body required (IHRMP, SHRM, CIPD, HRI).
  • Proven strong working experience in Collective Bargaining & Negotiation Skills.
  • Proven ability to represent management with Counsel at Labour Commission, the Courts and Statutory bodies, when required.
  • In-depth understanding HR and IR concepts.
  • In-depth understanding of stakeholders management concepts/skills.
  • In-depth working knowledge of existing local legislation on labour/industrial relations and employment, occupational health and safety, workmen compensation, pension and benefits, mining and explosives industry.
  • Budgeting and financial management skills.
  • Coaching/Supervisory/Mentoring skills.
  • Report writing and spreadsheet skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to present and interpret high-level HR data/information.
