Job Description

SCOPE OF WORK FOR DATA ANALYSIS, ACHIEVING IMPACT AT SCALE (CIFSRF/IDRC)

 

Introduction to Project
GFUSA in collaboration with Farm Radio International (FRI) is implementing the project “Achieving Impact at Scale” (AIS), which is aimed at sustainably integrating ICT platform solution into business service delivery, especially information and data services, within agricultural value chains.

The solution include two components, direct to Farmer (D2F) and intermediated. The D2F is a Participatory Radio Campaign (AGROTECH PRC), which segments are synchronized with the commodity seasonal calendar or cycle and offer a platform for live audience interaction as well as an IVR module for off air interaction. This component offer a more generalized advisory service. The intermediated component is a mobile application (AGROTECH SMARTEX) used by an agent to offer customized services to individuals or groups of smallholder farmers. The project is implemented through a variety of agricultural business stakeholders and local/community radio stations who have deployed over 200 field agents, who use the AGROTECH solution to provide services directly to over 8,000 smallholders. The initiative is financed through the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) jointly funded by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada. 

Description of the assignment
In interacting with smallholder farmers, field agents provide farmers with information and guidance, some of which are based on information and data collected from them. Different information and data are collected at different stages of interaction that is linked to the crop season.

The crops involved are maize, rice and soybean. The following data sets are involved for each smallholder farmer.

  1. Farmer biodata and short profile on farming experience and learning needs. 
  2. Seasonal crop plans and budgets on production, post-harvest, marketing and credit.
  3. Actual cultivated area of crop measured using AGROTECH SMARTEX.
  4. Crop assessment scores by agent in 5 selected performance areas, with associated field images.
  5. Updated data on crop plans and budgets and credit repayment.

All datasets have time stamps and GPS location coordinates included.  

The main objective of the assignment is to utilize the existing datasets to correlate, extract and formulate analyses that can inform the sustainability model of the AgroTech solution and agricultural extension and general service delivery policy development within Ghana and to inform Grameen Foundation. Thus GFUSA seeks the services of a data analyst to extract, analyze and write up the results of the analysis with the aim of fulfilling the objective of the assignment.

Scope of Work
The Data Analyst is expected to perform the following key tasks in addition to others, in order to achieve expected outputs and objective.

  • Liaise with relevant GFUSA staff to understand the field agent operations, data collection database structure, and existing data.
  • Develop titles/headings for at least 3 narratives that can be derived from the data based on the understanding of existing datasets and discussion with relevant GFUSA staff.
  • Extract analyzable, reliable and meaningful sets of data with the aim of fulfilling the narratives developed.
  • Process and statistically analyze the data to produce summaries in the form of tables, charts, graphs, maps etc. from the extracted data.
  • Develop high quality reports/briefs from the analysis with the purpose of influencing agricultural extension policy in Ghana and informing our partners and the general public on the project outcome. Liaise with relevant GFUSA staff for institutional logos, field images, etc.  

Expected Output
The Data Analyst will produce a general report and two policy briefs from the tasks outlined above.  The report should be at least 30 pages in length, excluding appendices and/or annexes. The policy briefs should not be more than four (4) pages long or 1,500 words. Length of policy brief can be up to 6 pages with images. 

Required Skills or Experience

  • University first degree in biometry, statistics, agricultural economics, agribusiness or relevant field
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in development projects, survey data collection and analysis.
  • Strong quantitative research skills and demonstrated experience with cleaning and analysis of raw social and economic data
  • Advanced proficiency with statistical software such as SPSS, Stata is required; experience with customer relation management software such as Salesforce.
  • Experience in producing high quality reports and briefs
  • Ability to produce interactive or static maps from geospatial information will be an advantage.

Duration of assignment
The assignment is for two (2) months. Selected Candidate is expected to start immediately.
