ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI (IDUAPRIEM) LIMITED (A subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti Limited) operates the combined Teberebie and Iduapriem open-pits gold mines at Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana and has a workforce of over 1400, including contractors.

Role Summary:

The purpose of this role is to develop and execute exploration strategies to realise the resource potential of the AAIL tenements and surrounding properties, as well as lead the Mine Geology discipline and guide the Resource Evaluation process.

Role Accountabilities

  • Developing and executing exploration strategies to realise the resource potential of the AAIL tenements and surrounding properties.
  • Designing exploration strategies so that the AAIL endowment is understood and incorporated into the mine's long term strategies.
  • Developing reliable resource models to provide a sound foundation for the development of the mine's business plan.
  • Understanding and managing risks and opportunities.
  • Continuously developing the understanding of the geology at AAIL [Evaluation, Exploration, Production]
  • Providing timely advice and monitoring on geological aspects of mine planning through ongoing monitoring and assessment.
  • Maintaining and improving key relations, in particular ensuring close liaison between mining, processing and production areas to assist with the effective and efficient management of the operation.
  • Forming part of the management input into the operation of the site to ensure timely completion of business and corporate objectives.
  • Communicating and reporting the resource figures in the required format to all parties concerned
  • Designing and implementing sound mine geology practices to reliably and consistently mine ore at the planned grades and quantities.
  • Designing and implementing reconciliation processes, and use these to optimize the resource modelling and mining practices. Design and implement blending strategies.
  • Planning, directing and coordinating all geological activities on the mine so that maximum mineral resources can be economically exploited for use in the mining operation and business planning.
  • Ensuring that effective and focused exploration is conducted to locate and accurately delineate- mineral resources that are economically exploitable.
  • Providing timely ore delineation, as accurately as is technically feasible, for mining and business planning through accurate grade control.
  • Managing the AAIL mining and exploration leases and keep them in good standing.
  • Administering the legal requirements with regards to exploration activities so that tenure is secure.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor of Science or Msc. in Geology or related field; professional Geologist certification (e.g. CPG, PG, PGeo or equivalent)
  • Fifteen (15) years working experience in hard rock open pit mining, Mine Geology, Exploration and Valuation.
  • Experience with 3-D modeling and mine planning software: proficiency in use of Leapfrog, Datamine, Bloy and Fusion Database is an advantage; familiarity with MS Office Suite is required.     
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a wide diversity of geology related projects along with mine site experience.
  • Strong teamwork, leadership, advocacy and mentoring skills.
  • Robust organisation and personal discipline and good thought processes through which sound characterisation of both issues and tactical way-forward are constructed and socialised.
  • Ability to set priorities on competing issues according to value to business.
  • Sound relationship management and engagement with Regulatory Bodies, Government and other external stakeholders for effective positioning of the Mine.
  • High degree of competence in written and verbal communication skills.
  • Motivated, self-starting, willing and independent, with high level of initiative.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health, safety, environment and community.
