SFMP is a 5-year (2014 - 2019) food security project, headquartered in Accra. It seeks to support the government and civil society organizations to rebuild targeted marine fisheries stocks that are a critical food souce in Ghana but current are reaching crisis level of depletion. To address this national food security issue in Ghana, SFMP supports the adoption of sustainable fishing practices and exploitation levels. The project contributes to the Government of Ghana’s fisheries development objectives as well as the US Government’s Feed the Future development objectives of poverty and hunger reduction. The project works closely with government agencies, fisheries authorities, policy makers and fisher folk in the entire coastal area of Ghana to achieve project goals. 

Job Description

The USAID/Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP), seeks a Communications and Media Relations Officer for full time employment. SFMP is a 5-year (2014 - 2019) US government food security project, headquartered in Accra.  The project seeks to rebuild targeted marine fisheries stocks through the adoption of sustainable fisheries practices.  The project works closely with government agencies, fisheries authorities, policy makers and fisher folk in the entire coastal stretch of Ghana to achieve project goals. 

This position is based in Accra, with periodic travel to locations in all four coastal regions in Ghana. 

Terms of References 

  • The Communications and Media Relations Officer will report to the Communication and Outreach Specialist to achieve the following:
  • Engagement with the Fisheries Commission and other partners to communicate sustainable fisheries management concepts and programs to all stakeholders at the direction of the Communications Specialist or the Chief of Party as needed.
  • Contribute to development and execution of specific SFMP communications work streams by interacting with the full range of media and communications partners including print, television and radio media houses and points of contact in coastal regions of Ghana. 
  • Lead on the design, production and dissemination of multimedia products such as videos, audio products and photographs and the production of IEC materials to enhance visibility of Fisheries Commission efforts.
  • Work with other SFMP staff and sub-grantee implementing partners to communicate the state of artisanal fisheries in Ghana and the causes of the current crisis in small pelagic fisheries.
  • Developed and maintain close working relations with media outlets and identify opportunities for SFMP for media placement.
  • Prepare written news articles, press releases and media advisories to be disseminated through press and other channels.
  • Implement media relations with national, regional and local media.
  • Assist with any other aspects of SFMP’s media work as directed by the Communication and Outreach Specialist

 

Required Skills or Experience

  • A minimum of University Degree in Communications, social science, journalism or related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years relevant experience in public relations, communications and/or advocacy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English and a good understanding of Ghanaian languages such as Twi, Ga, Ewe and Fante.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and use of multi-media communications.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office products used for document preparation and production, including Word and PowerPoint.  
  • Experience with print, electronic and broadcast media relations.

Preferred qualifications

  • Familiarity with USAID or other international donor project communications requirements, including branding and accessibility requirements for electronic documents.
  • Familiarity with the utilization of Adobe family of document formatting and processing software, especially Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat, as well as In-Design or their equivalent.
  • Experience or training in basic graphic design using Power point, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop or their equivalent.
  • Knowledge in basic photography skills is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge or experience working with the Fisheries sector a plus
