Job Description

Job Purpose
To perform highly skilled routine maintenance works (preventive, corrective and predictive), assist in design and modification, repair and troubleshooting of steam generating apparatuses, equipment and systems to ensure maximum equipment efficiency. 
 
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Operates high pressure fire tube boilers/steam generators in accordance with manufacturer’s specification/operating instructions.
  • Maintain maximum boiler efficiency for related production schedules by reading and interpreting gauges, level indicators and flow meters.
  • Service oil heaters, pumps, oil storage facilities, and unloading equipment under the supervision of the of the supervisor
  • Assist in carrying out troubleshooting activities on the steam boilers and related ancillary equipment.
  • Observe all boiler plant operations through the correct use of test and measuring instruments as well as control equipment (electronic/pneumatic/hydraulic controls, pressure gauges and safety devices).
  • Perform all boiler blow-down and safety valve checks.
  • Perform chemical test and operate boiler feed water system.
  • Maintain records and reports relative to steam plant operations (boiler logbook, RFO consumption records, etc.)
  • Makes regular checks of plant equipment and report to the electrical and utilities supervisor or the electrical technician on duty.
  • Conduct maintenance works on steam boilers and related ancillary equipment.
  • Clean the boiler tubes as per given schedule to ensure boiler efficiency
  • Ensure boiler house and surroundings are kept clean at all times by preventing pipe leaks and spillage of fuel. If fuel is spilled accidentally, it must be cleaned immediately
  • Assist the stores personnel to receive, check and unload fuels supplied to the company.
  • Check and replace gaskets and seals on the steam lines and connections.
  • Regular research of new practices and procedures in the electrical engineering field
  • Perform all other related works as directed by the electrical and utilities engineering supervisor.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Education – A minimum of senior high school certificate in General science or technician part 1 certificate from an accredited and recognized institution
  • Experience – A minimum of 1 year working experience in a related field/position. 
  • Past employment in a food processing establishment an advantage.
  • Technical application of engineering and HSE principles. 
Technical and Behavioural Competencies
  • Prior experience in the maintenance and operation of steam boilers; or any equivalent combination of theoretical training and relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam generation plant equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable state and practice codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions to be observed in installation, operation and maintenance of steam generating plants.
  • Ability to operate and use required tools and equipment skilfully and safely.
  • Ability to identify potential hazards, including instances of unsafe boiler operation and take the appropriate actions to correct any identified hazard and immediately report it to the electrical and utilities engineering supervisor.
  • Ability to make rough sketches.
  • Ability to analyze and respond safely and appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend plans and blueprints as appropriate to profession.
  • Ability to perform reasonable physical labour.
  • Ability to train and direct the work of other classified staff in the section.
  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationship.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.
