Job Description

  • Title: Director of Programs, Ghana
  • Reports to:  Country Director, Ghana 
  • Location: Accra, Ghana 
  • Travel: Domestic up to 40%, international up to 5%
  • Grade: 10
 
 
 
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Programs Director will be a part of the senior management team, and will support: 
  • Quality control: direct and oversee all Ghana projects. Develop, inspire, and enable a team of Ghanaian professionals to deliver high quality results to optimize cost-effectiveness 
  • Strategy: support the Country Director by strategically selecting areas of work, partnerships, and methodologies that most effectively contribute to poverty reduction, and assure excellence of implementation through total quality management and evidence-based decision-making 
  • Fundraising: support the Country Director to secure funding to sustain and grow the organzation’s contribution to the economic development of Ghana 
The duties and responsibilities of this position are organized into four broad categories: project oversight; operations and fundraising. 
 
Project Oversight 
  • Direct and oversee all Ghana projects, including; project implementation, reporting, quality control, and financial management 
  • Manage and supervise Program Managers, Coordinators, and other project leads 
  • Conduct overall monitoring of projects against milestones and work-plans, ensuring that deliverables, budgets, and timelines are met 
  • Lead project teams to enhance the quality of their work, with a specific focus on managing for greater impact 
  • Ensure sound financial management, including overseeing the development and tracking of project budgets that align strategically with work plans, targets, and deliverables 

Operations 

  • In coordination with Human Resources, ensure that appropriate staff are recruited, trained and assigned to projects or tasks efficiently and effectively 
  • Recruit, orient, and provide for the professional development of highly effective staff in various functions; motivate, inspire and enable a team of Ghanaian and international professionals to deliver high quality results 
  • Participate in and support all corporate processes such as the annual planning & budgeting process, attendance at leadership meetings, preparation of program status and pipeline reports, and oversee the correct and complete reporting of Ghana projects to the corporate measurement system 

Fundraising 

  • In collaboration with the new Business Development unit, support the development of leads, concepts, and proposals 
  • Cultivate, grow, and improve relationships and synergies among in-country partners and donors, including local government, bilateral and multilateral development/donor organizations; foundations and relevant local NGOs; private sector associations and corporations 
  • Represent the organization by attending and giving presentations to high-level audiences, business owners, donors and policy-makers at conferences, workshops, and other key stakeholder events to promote the organization’s mission and objectives 
  • Undertake industry assessments, market research, and other analytical exercises that generate insight into opportunities for the organization to achieve its mission 

Other 

  • Conduct annual staff performance review for all direct reports 
  • Conduct other strategic and operational tasks as assigned by the Country Director 

Required Skills or Experience

  • A Master’s degree in business, economics, agriculture or other relevant discipline with minimum of 8 years of professional experience in a relevant field, including development of: agricultural value chains, private sector and/or entrepreneurship, or Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience. 
  • At least 3 years of work experience in international development in Africa  
  • Strong project management skills including the ability to anticipate demand and manage multiple tasks and projects while meeting tight deadlines 
  • Experience in project management, including planning, budgeting and financial management, M&E, team leadership, and staff development 
  • Detail orientation, including strong organizational, analytical and quantitative skills 
  • Proven team player with strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills 
  • Outstanding written communication skills
  • Fluency in English required
