Job Description

The Field Based Mud Engineer is responsible for ensuring the properties of the drilling fluid are within designed specification. He works closely with the Senior Drilling Supervisor to disseminate information about mud properties and expected treatment about any changes that might occur during the operations.

Relationships: Reports directly to the Senior Drilling Supervisor and functionally to the Office-based Mud Engineer.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities

  • Supervise all fluids (mud & cement) activities to ensure strict compliance to Implementation of the mud engineering programs on the rig efficiently
  • Experience in drilling extended reach and horizontal wells
  • Understanding of hole cleaning and cuttings bed prevention
  • Maintain mud parameters to ensure well stability, gauge hole, monitor cutting returns and proper hole cleaning with adequate circulation
  • Adequate mud weights to manage well control as well as well stability
  • Prevent excessive mud weights to minimize formation damage and drilling related skin, to meet the environmental guidelines and as per the statutory requirements
  • Manage and supervise waste disposal especially cuttings and mud
  • Monitor solid control equipment performance, maintain the appropriate screens in shakers and utilization of all solids control equipment to minimize surface losses
  • Manage mud tank system efficiently for muds, slugs, cement mix water and spacers
  • Testing and completion brines or any other liquid
  • Maintain adequate and appropriate mud chemicals storage including bulk material like barite and bentonite, quality daily mud reports, mud consumption, cost estimates and to maintain data base
  • Monitor and manage loss circulation with appropriate LCM pills and advise DSVS as required
  • Prepares end of phase and well mud and solids control equipment reports including analysis of problems, recommendations, etc.

Required Skills or Experience

Experience

  • Minimum of 15 Years of Experience in the oil and gas industry with at least 5 years as Senior Mud/Drilling Fluids Engineer with relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience with Drilling and Workover rigs for all types of mud systems.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering (Other Science Disciplines may be considered)
  • Offshore survival and HUET (BOSIET) certification
  • Recent offshore experience (Jack-up or deep offshore rig) is required
  • Must have worked in an Operator’s (oil company’s) environment. Experience with international oil companies will be added advantage.

  • Must be innovative and positive in dealing with changes and reacting to project difficulties
  • Effectively managing time and resources to ensure that work is completed efficiently 
  • Sets high standards of performance for self and others; assumes responsibility and accountability for the successful completion of assignments or tasks; self-imposing standards of excellence rather than have standards imposed
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office) and familiarity with relevant industry software
