Project Summary
Co-operative Development Foundation (CDF) is a Canadian based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) leading in promoting self-help and mutual aid in communities, economic and social development using co-operative enterprise. CDF together with SEND Ghana is implementing a 5year Global Affairs Canada (GAC) funded project called 4R Nutrient Stewardship Project (4R-NSP). The 4R- NSP seeks to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability for 30,000 (50% women) in four Districts within the Northern and Savana Regions of Ghana.
 
As part of the strategies to sustain the impact of the 4R-NSP project, CDF will work with farmer cooperatives to effectively engage Value Chain actors including, Financial Institutions, agricultural input suppliers, technology suppliers among others. This will enhance the capacity of farmer coops to sustainably mobilise their members to engage with crop value chains profitably.
 
The Need
CDF Canada is seeking for an individual with the requisite expertise to fill the Value Chain/Business Facilitator position. The person will be based at the Tamale office and will report to the Country Manager.  The Value Chain/Business Facilitator will receive technical guidance and support from the Country Manager. The Value Chain/Business Facilitator will be at the forefront on access to finance, equipment/technology, market and inputs for cooperative development. The Value Chain Facilitator works closely with the implementing partner staff to identify bottlenecks of Farmer Cooperative Enterprises and supports in the development of strategies in addressing them. He/she identify business incentives for Cooperatives to invest and create new relationships that enhances profitability of Cooperatives.
 
The Value Chain/Business Facilitator works closely with SEND through Cooperative Development and Value Chain Officers to deliver on interventions to the cooperatives.
 
Specific tasks as indicated below;
  • Undertake scoping in the project’s Zone of Influence (ZOI) and beyond to identify and develop a database of value chain actors to be engaged by the project. 
  • Facilitates viable linkages among cooperatives, buyers, service providers, private financiers, input and equipment dealers aimed at identifying business opportunities that enhance value chain development.
  • Facilitate and support farmer coops, aggregators and other supply chain actors to successfully market their products and services.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze market information including pricing, demand and buyer requirements for dissemination to cooperatives and other actors along the value chain.
  • Introduce the concept and organization of training for cooperatives on Village Savings and Loans Associations to mobilize funds for investments in production and undertake other livelihood activities.
  • Monitor and provide technical support in the implementation of the VSLA 
  • Work closely with financial institutions to deliver tailored financial products to farmer coops
  • Lead and facilitate the process to develop guidelines in the administration of technology fund and monitor the process
  • Monitor the performance of loans and provide technical support to field team in the identification of farmer coops credit needs and subsequent linkages to FI
  • Facilitate the engagement of coops with value chain actors 
  • Find market opportunities and impediments for supply chain development and to support in the development of strategies to solve bottlenecks
  • Submit periodic monthly and quarterly progress reports as required by project management.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Country Manager within the area of technical competence.

Required Skills or Experience

Education
University Degree in an agriculture, development studies, economics, business studies or other relevant disciplines.

Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years work experience relating to Agricultural value chain and business facilitation.  Experience in the delivery of capacity building activities with farmers, buyers and input dealers and community stakeholders including trainings, monitoring, meetings and others.
  • Experience in the promotion and support of women’s economic participation and empowerment especially in the Village Savings and Loans Associations. 
  • Previous experience in working in Nanumba North and South, East Gonja and Kpandai in the Savannah and Northern Regions of Ghana will be an added advantage.
