REPORTS TO:   Technical/Plant Manager

ROLE PURPOSE:

• Supervise, coordinate and monitor sorting of solid waste to obtain recyclable materials and organic waste for composting.
• Coordinate Recycling Program, monitor pickup and collection of recyclable materials by staff and contracted vendors.
• Support by promoting implementations of Sustainability Plan. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                     

• Ensures MSW are effectively sorted and processed into prescribed fractions.
• Ensures that the waste received are processed on the principle of first-in-first out procedures.
• Accomplishes manufacturing staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.
• Maintains staff by recommending, selecting, orienting, and training employees; developing personal growth opportunities.
• Maintains work flow by monitoring steps of the process; setting processing variables; observing control points and equipment; monitoring personnel and resources; studying methods; implementing cost reductions; developing reporting procedures and systems; facilitating corrections to malfunctions within process control points; initiating and fostering a spirit of cooperation within and between departments.
• Completes production plan by scheduling and assigning personnel; accomplishing work results; establishing priorities; monitoring progress; revising schedules; resolving problems; reporting results of the processing flow on shift production summaries.
• Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
• Ensures operation of equipment by calling for repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
• Provides manufacturing information by compiling, initiating, sorting, and analyzing production performance records and data; answering questions and responding to requests.
• Creates and revises systems and procedures by analyzing operating practices, record-keeping systems, forms of control, and budgetary and personnel requirements; implementing change.
• Maintains safe and clean work environment by educating and directing personnel on the use of all control points, equipment, and resources; maintaining compliance with established policies and procedures.
• Maintains working relationship with the client by following the terms of the off-taker agreement.
• Resolves personnel problems by analyzing data; investigating issues; identifying solutions; recommending action.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
• Researches, analyzes and develops methods to improve and promote waste diversion from landfill, including assisting with integration of green alternative products and processes.
• Implementing the sustainability plan and waste management-related program activities.

Required Skills or Experience

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Environment / Sanitation or equivalent from an accredited College or University. (Masters Degree would be an advantage)
• Certificate in Production and Operations Management will be a plus
• Supervision, Coaching, Managing Processes, Process Improvement, and Production Planning skills.

Experience

• Seven (7) years working experience with 3 years in leadership role as a waste recycling and compost expert.
• An experience in running sorting and composting processes and training in biological processes, recycling, and composting techniques and two years’ experience in public contact work and/or experience in program coordination; or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience.
• Membership of a recognized professional body.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED

• Sorting and Composting facilitator operator training certificate preferred.
• Excellent knowledge/understanding of Health, Safety issues and codes of practice relevant to environmental sanitation/waste management.
• Ability to work in a fast paced and often stressful environment.
• Excellent attendance record and trust worthy.
• Good knowledge/understanding of waste management practices.
• Good planning, documentation and organizing skills.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Good knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Internet
• Production and operations management skills
• Ability to make decisions quickly and confidently based on company policies and practices.
• Supervise and supports resource conservation.
• Valid Driver’s license required.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned by your line manager.
