Job Description

A small reputable Women-led Non-Governmental Organisation dedicated in advancing Women Rights and Agency in Society at large seeks to recruit qualified applicants to occupy the position of Financial Controller.

  • Reports to: Programme Manager
  • Employment Status: One year Contract, (40 hours/week)
  • Job Location: Tamale

Position Summary

To manage the finances and other programme resources in a manner consistent with IASs and to ensure that all programme staff including Trustees follow laid down procedures as detailed in the financial management procedures and guidelines. The incumbent will also ensure that timely and qualitative financial reports are delivered to all stakeholders including external stakeholders as well as regulatory agencies.

Key Responsibilities
This post is aimed at improving the financial performance management capacity, financial policies, procedures and system, by specifically attending to the following:

Financial Performance Management

  • Produce qualitative monthly management accounting reports, including all financial aspects of the organization that is I&E, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow and Capital Expenditure monitoring.
  • Address quantitative management accounts production process deficiencies, improving the month-end accounting procedures to eliminate long time lag.
  • Ensure that all budget holders and their designate supervisors or administrative support staffs receive relevant monthly management accounting information.
  • Develop a process to facilitate monthly forecasting and reporting to the programme manager.
  • Highlight, and through working with the programme manager and systems officer, address any risks to the integrity of financial accounts and performance reporting for the organization.

Financial Policies, Procedures and Systems

  • Review existing financial policies and procedures, document and advice on changes necessary to achieve best practice compliance.
  • Implement these policies and procedures once the Board of Trustees approve same. 
  • Communicate these to and train staff on the use and compliance with these policies and procedures. This will include face to face meetings, formal training and workshop delivery to ensure the knowledge is conveyed to all relevant staff across the organization
  • Carry out walk through tests, provide the necessary forms and administrative tools to ensure each policy/ procedure is ready to be used by all concerned.
  • Prepare annual accounts and maintain records for the annual statutory audit.

Communication and Reporting

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Presentation skills: example to train others or deliver workshops. Experience of presenting at board level, workshop facilitators or delivery of training would be a prerequisite.
  • Exposure to challenging environments and use of communication skills to achieve objectives.
  • Able to communicate technical financial matters to others who may not be as financially aware.
  • Be able to report extensively to a wide range of donors.
  • Ability to generate reports to suit different needs of different users.

Required Skills or Experience

  • A bachelors degree in Accounting or commerce (5 years minimum experience in a similar position)
  • HND in Accountancy(6 year experience minimum in a similar position)
  • CA (Ghana) part 2 or ACCA foundation level
  •  years minimum in a similar position
  • Experience working with women

Technical:

  • Extensive financial management and accounting experience, covering policies and procedures and reporting- procedural audit and/or business analysis experience would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of best practice in financial and accounting processes.
  • Some knowledge of financial management systems and exposure to business analysis, business process design- exposure to financial management systems design or development at the implementation stage would be advantageous.
  • Intermediate level knowledge of MS Office application, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Knowledge of accounting software will be advantageous.
  • Sound organizational and time management skills, preferably with some project management skills.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work on own initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Problem solving and aptitude for research, and thinking outside the norm.
  • Ability to demonstrate resilience and patience under challenges.
  • Focused on task in hand and end-deliverables.
  • Effective planning and time management skills.
