Together, we develop solutions in education, economic opportunities, and empowerment to overcome inequality and exclusion for youth around the world, particularly young women and young refugees. WUSC currently works in 25 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, with an annual budget of approximately CAD $40 million. We have over 90 staff in our Ottawa office, and over 200 people overseas implementing 16 development projects in collaboration with donors such as Global Affairs Canada, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Mastercard Foundation and the African Development Bank.

The INVEST Project
The Innovation in Non-Traditional Vocational Education and Skills Training (INVEST) is a 5 year initiative that will build sustainable pathways to enhanced economic empowerment, well-being and inclusive growth for 5,000 urban poor young women in Accra, Kumasi, and Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. Working in high growth sectors, the initiative will test and scale innovative, sustainable models to improve the enabling environment, reduce gender-specific barriers to women’s economic participation, and enhance access to decent work for marginalized women in non-traditional sectors.   

Nature and Scope
Under the direction of the Project Director and with the support of the Public Engagement and Advocacy Officer, the National Volunteer will contribute to the delivery of communications and documentation plans/strategies for the INVEST project in Ghana.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the communications team in content development and dissemination for organisational activities and those involving project work streams;
  • Maintain online communications content , such as newsletters, audiovisual products and press releases;
  • Review and make recommendations on the organization’s website and social media pages
  • Support the communications team in hosting online and in person events;
  • In collaboration with the project communications team, undertake public engagement activities as needed;
  • Support the design and implementation of Communications and Advocacy strategies and Public Engagement plans in collaboration with the project team;
  • Develop a Communications plan and create a series of communications and advocacy tools showcasing the coalitions supporting women in non-traditional trade;
  • Engage and support local partners to build and cultivate strategic partnership to leverage advocacy opportunities with sector players and implementing partners;
  • Work with project partner organisations to provide guidance to their communications, advocacy and outreach activities.;
  • Develop communication and advocacy materials, tools and resources for project partners;
  • Support project partners in developing communication and advocacy strategies and plans;
  • Participate in pre-assignment online or in person training/orientation;
  • Ensure the representation and engagement of women in all activities and program benefits;
  • Submit volunteer timesheets, reports and deliverables as required by the project communication team and partner organization assigned to by WUSC.

PARTNER DESCRIPTION
Vocational Training for Females (VTF) Programme is a Christian-based NGO providing support services to enhance the delivery of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana and skills development in general.VTF is very instrumental in championing and  influencing policies that have led to the current dispensation of TVET in Ghana.VTF deliver services Including;  advocacy, entrepreneurship development, stakeholder networking, awareness creation, job placement & counselling, micro credit, literacy and  numeracy training in the TVET sector.

The Ghana TVET Coalition (G-TVET) is a national advocacy group dedicated to achieving access to Quality and Relevant Skills Training for Employment and entrepreneurship through influencing government policies on education and skills, and citizen’s attitude and perceptions about TVET.

The Commission  for Technical and Vocational Education and Training Ghana (CTVET Ghana) is a national regulatory body set up by an Act of Parliament of the Republic of Ghana to coordinate and oversee all aspects of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Ghana with the major objective to formulate policies for skills development across the broad spectrum of pre-tertiary and tertiary TVET within the  formal, informal and non-formal sectors.

Required Skills or Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or Communications or a relevant field
  • A minimum of two years of post-national service experience in communications, journalism, graphic design, social media marketing etc.
  • Experience developing online communications content, particularly for non-profit organizations
  • Experience in developing communications and advocacy tools, resources, content and plans.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a remote working group
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Comfortable using online working platforms
  • Access to a reliable internet connection (for remote working where needed)
  • A commitment to gender equality, youth inclusion, and international volunteering
  • Experience with group facilitation and trainings, including content development
  • Flexibility, adaptability, excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Written and oral fluency in English 
  • Knowledge of a local language will be considered an asset.
