The Cocoa Abrabopa Association (CAA) is an independent cocoa farmer Association established for the serious Ghanaian cocoa farmers. The Association is a non-political, non-profit organization seeking a Better Life for its members by professionalizing cocoa farming. The association has over 60 field staff involved in different operational activities. CAA is Rainforest Alliance Certified and has an Internal Management System to ensure compliance with the standards. As part of the standards additional verification activities need to be carried out in the operational areas of the association.

Job Description

Job Purpose

To develop and maintain a sufficient documentation for the Internal Control system at the CAA main office in Kumasi with regard to biodiversity and natural conservation and undertake all activities concerning GIS/GPS mapping and utilization

  • Reports To: Certification Manager
  • Responsible For: GPS Surveyors

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Certification Manager to develop adequate documentation system needed for the Internal Management System for certification, particularly with respect to biodiversity and natural conservation.
  • Works closely with the Certification Manager to create maximum benefit out of the ARC/GIS programme.
  • Engages all opportunities the ARC/GIS programme provides to create farm plans, Link the farmers’ acreage to the out growers’ module of CAA, Map all farms in the base map of Ghana, Identification of farms sharing borders with forest reserves and relevant water streams and areas unsuitable for cocoa farming
  • Creation of unique reference in GIS with direct link to Out grower’s module from farmer, farmer group, plot, size of farm, land tenure system, age of farmer, gender and age of farm.
  • Efficiently assess the data gathered from the GPS Surveyors.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of all the GPS Surveyors on the basis of their key responsibilities and in line with the PMS.
  • Supervise, plan, motivate and organise all the surveyors to execute their duties accurately.
  • Compliment the preparation of master list for certification internal audit.
  • Liaise with forestry commission on deforestation and forest preservation activities.
  • Train new GPS Surveyors on usage of GPS devices and process of demarcation.
  • Prepare and provide weekly, monthly and quarterly reports to the Extension Manager on all GIS activities.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by your supervisor.

Required Skills or Experience

  • ​A minimum of BSc.  Agriculture, Land Management, Administration or GIS related studies and 2-3 years extensive field work in cocoa or other relevant crop.
  • Experience in the use of GIS programmes
  • Proactive attitude with regards to development of an adequate documentation and mapping system within the CAA.
  • Preferably knowledge and experience on land tenure issues in Ghana.
  • Ability to work independently and constructively to meeting project deliverables.
  • Well-versed in field related activities bordering on certification and farming issues such as soil management, waste management, labour issues, cultivation practices, environmental and biodiversity, input application, safety aspects etc.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent writing, reporting, organizing and leadership as well as presentation skills.
  • Perfect computer skills and have knowledge and ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Should be able to work under pressure.
  • Must be a fast learner
  • Extensive knowledge on certification and other related initiatives.
