GrEEn Value Chain and Business Promotion Experts
 
 
1. Overview and background
The Boosting Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities in Ghana (GrEEn) project is a four-year project implemented in the Ashanti and Western regions of Ghana.
 
With the overall objective of contributing to addressing the root causes of irregular migration by supporting sustainable and climate resilient local economies through the creation of green jobs and promoting development in regions of departure, transit and return for migrants, GrEEn is targeted at women, youth, returnees and Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
 
Primarily funded by the European Union through its Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF) for Africa, GrEEn is being implemented by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).
 
GrEEn focuses on three specific objectives:
  • To support the transition of local economies to green and climate resilient development.
  • To improve the employability and entrepreneurship capabilities of selected people by matching them with market opportunities and mentoring into (self) employment and enterprise development, with a focus on green and climate resilient local economies.
  • To create and strengthen local ecosystems that support youth (self-)employment and the growth of Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs)
SNV’s targets within the GrEEn project are the following:
  • At least 5,000 people trained and coached for employability and entrepreneurship;
  • At least 3,500 people have created or developed self-employment opportunities;
  • At least 100 M/SMEs have been incubated or accelerated to expand their business;
  • At least 1,500 decent and sustainable jobs created by M/SMEs.
SNV’s intervention are focused on three core sectors: agriculture, renewable energy and WASH.
 
In terms of target groups, SNV will work with the following:
  • Youth, defined as men and women between the ages of 18 and 35: 60% to 80% of all beneficiaries,
  • Women, including those above the age of 35: 40% to 60%,
  • Returning migrants: 5-10 %.
 
GrEEn requires the services of ten business promotion experts in the value chains of agriculture, renewable energy and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (including Recycling), to support the SMEs in its Incubation and Acceleration and OYEE Programmes with market linkages services.  
Examples of businesses are mushroom production, biomass, briquette, plastic recycling, organic farming, organic cosmetic formulation, fish farming, organic fertilizers, food processing, climate smart agriculture etc.
 
2. Objectives of the value chain expert support
  • Provide strategic direction to the SMEs for market growth and development
  • Identify input and output markets in the project implementation districts
  • Support market linkages activities between the SMEs in the programme
  • Identify opportunities for industrial symbiosis between the GrEEn programme SMEs and other businesses in the districts, regions and rest of the country
3. Tasks to be performed
  • Familiarise with the businesses in the GrEEn Incubation, Acceleration and OYEE Programmes - understanding their needs and their sector specific challenges
  • Work with the SMEs and GrEEn’s partner hubs to develop strategies for market growth and development
  • Work with the SMEs and GrEEn’s partner hubs to identify potential input and output markets for their businesses
  • Connect the SMEs to relevant input and output markets and other businesses to expand their customer base and ensure reliable input supply
  • Support SMEs to identify new revenue streams or improve on existing streams
  • Exchange with the hubs and other service providers on the GrEEn incubation/acceleration programmes; provide recommendations to the GrEEn team on improvements to its incubation/acceleration programmes
4. Timeline and estimated level of effort
The assignment is expected to last for eight months. The ten selected value chain experts and business promoters will be expected to support at least 6 SMEs each in GrEEn’s Incubation and Acceleration and OYEE programmes in the Ashanti and Western Regions. The assignment is expected to begin in June 2022 and end in February 2023. 
 
5. Deliverables
  • Recommended marketing strategies co-created with the SMEs and GrEEn’s partner hubs
  • Input and output registry for the GrEEn Programme SMEs
  • SMEs connected to established input and output markets both local and international
  • Final report detailing the support given to the SME, the progress and achievements during the period, challenges and recommendations to the SME and GrEEn.

Required Skills or Experience

  • The experts must have an educational and professional background and experience in business administration, supply chain management, business development, market linkages, export promotion or similar.
  • Experience in the value chains of at least one of the Agric, Renewable Energy and WASH sectors is required.
