Job Description

MAIN DUTIES                    

  • Monitoring the spinal cord and nerve root intra operatively to identify any risks or injury to the spinal cord and its neutral elements with the goal of preventing post-operative neuro deficits by providing real-time assessment of neural structures at risk during surgery.
  • Interacting with surgical team and surgeons during surgery to provide accurate information about neurological status of the patient.
  • Recognizing normal IOM response patterns and their latencies, abnormal patterns, their variants and their relevance to the patent’s neurological status.
  • Understanding the medical and pharmacological/anesthetic conditions that influence all recording IOM modalities.
  • Recognizing the need for timely intervention to assure signal and data integrity.
  • Discussing with the Surgeon and surgical team members the baseline results of patients.
  • Reporting alarm criteria to Surgeon or Neurologist during surgical events and duly document communication and actions taken.
  • Completing all IOM logs, files and work/technical sheet including a technical description of the IOM modality recorded.
  • Assisting the Surgeons, Neurologist and/or designated physician with interpretation of IOM modalities monitored and recorded.
  • Providing displays, labels and printing waveforms for interpretation marking, measuring, and calculating information such as latencies, voltages, and conduction times when required.
  • Uploading patients IOM reports in a timely manner.
  • Choosing the right type of electrode based on IOM modality, expected outcome and patient needs.
  • Measuring accurately the placement position for each electrode.
  • Using the right techniques and materials to ensure optimal preparation of electrode site while ensuring patient safety and minimizing patient’s discomfort.
  • Placing cables, stimulators and head boxes safely from falls, spills and patient’s body fluids.
  • Ensuring that electrode wires connecting to the head box are not entangled in anesthesia’s lines and are out of the surgical field.

Required Skills or Experience

COMPETENCIES / REQUIREMENTS

  • BSc Physics and or Biology
  • A minimum of at least two (2) years working experience

Technical Knowledge/ Skills

  • Must be a quick leaner, and have the ability to understand new technology and concepts.
  • Requires ability to stand, walk, turn, stoop, among several equipment in the OR.
  • Ability to use PPE.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time while concentrating on monitoring computer screen during surgical procedures.
