Total Family Health Organisation (TFHO) is an indigenous Ghanaian social marketing organization duly registered in accordance with the laws of Ghana on February 1, 2017. We work to improve the health of people living in Ghana primarily through implementation of innovative evidence-based interventions that increases access to and utilization of health products and services in a measurable and impactful way. Our key intervention areas include Family Planning and Reproductive Health, Maternal, New-born, and Child Health (RMNCH), communicable and noncommunicable diseases, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), nutrition, and malaria. We utilize our deep insight and skills in Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) and social marketing to promote positive social and behavior change among individuals and communities.

Job Description

Job Summary

The Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Officer will provide technical support and support to all social marketing and other interventions related to behavior change. S/he will support the development and implementation of TFHO’s behavior change strategy focusing on culturally sensitive and acceptable solutions for changing behavior related to family planning, maternal and child health and water sanitation and hygiene and other health sectors. The SBCC Officer will play a critical role in the program and technical aspects of developing requests for proposals and oversee any SBCC-related aspects of the organization's business development strategies. The SBCC Officer will support the development of comprehensive communication tools and SBCC materials and activities, using evidence-based strategies and methodologies, in close collaboration with other programmatic supports such as the Marketing Department. 

Job Specification

Support

  • Support in the creation of communication strategies that effectively responds to the needs of the target audience and addresses any challenges related to the context/setting, the community, or the intervention.
  • Develop and distribute case studies and success stories to highlight successfully implemented SBCC interventions.
  • Provide relevant input and assist in the implementation of project deliverables, work plans, and reports.
  • Implement various SBCC learnings using various methods organization-wide (e.g., coaching, job-shadowing, online training) to support SBCC knowledge management

General Functions

The SBCC officer shall carry out all the below functions under the supervision of the Snr. SBCC Officer:

  • Support to develop, plan, prepare and manage effective innovative, comprehensive evidence-based SBCC initiatives for different target populations
  • Support to develop an evidence map of interventions for social, behavioral, and community engagement interventions for reproductive, maternal, child, water, sanitation, and hygiene-related health products and services.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of health topics such as family planning and contraception; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health. 
  • Work in close collaboration with Snr. SBCC Officer and other TFHO departments to implement the SBCC strategies in an integrated manner.
  • Support to advance SBCC efforts across TFHO’s programming activities and initiatives.
  • Support to evaluate the success, challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned in demand generation activities for family planning and other health products and services
  • Support and effectively engage stakeholders such as public, private, and NGO (or civil society) sector agencies, relevant government ministries, service delivery groups, audience members, advertising agencies, research organizations, media, and technical experts.

Other Responsibilities

Any other official responsibilities as may be required from the SBCC Officer.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Communication, Public Health, Marketing, Sociology, Psychology, or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant project/program experience in Ghana involving the use of strategic advocacy, media, interpersonal and dialogue-based communication, and social mobilization to systematically accelerate change in the underlying drivers of behavior change.
  • Working experience, expertise, and understanding of the non-profit, development, and aid sector.

Knowledge

  • Proven technical expertise in behavior change, including but not limited to creating, designing, implementing,  and/or evaluating of social behavior change health interventions.
  • Knowledge of USAID regulations and reporting requirements is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the social, cultural, and environmental antecedents of health behavior across diverse populations.
  • Experience in using qualitative methodologies such as focus group discussions and in-depth interviews.

  • Teamwork and People Management – ability to collaborate with colleagues at all levels, especially government and other relevant agencies and institutions in the delivery of total family health to the people of Ghana.

  • Microsoft 365 Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Planner, PowerPoint, Teams, OneDrive & SharePoint)
  • Excellent Interpersonal Relationships – role requires building and maintaining healthy relationships across all levels of the organization
  • Information Gathering & Monitoring – role requires using relevant data to make informed decisions 
  • Adaptability – ability to anticipate and respond swiftly to changing dynamics within the local and international setting
    • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of political and ethical issues surrounding the project’s work
  • Problem Solving Skills - Makes decisions that have major implications on meeting funder/donor deadlines; maintaining the credibility of the project; and ensuring proper stewardship of time and financial resources. The SBCC Officer is expected to:
    1. Effectively apply knowledge of technical areas to solve a range of problems
    2. Responsibly resolve project challenges that may be complex, highly varied, and require considerable analytical and objective decision-making skills.
    3. Exercise good judgment within well-defined practices and policies
  • Target Oriented and Able to Meet Project Objectives: Ability to prepare budgets, workplans, M&E plans, activity schedules and Gantt Charts, activity monitoring plans etc.
  • Emotional intelligence - ability to effectively understand and apply emotional intelligence - in the line of duty, in people management, and in stakeholder engagement.
