Job Description

We are expanding and opening a new branch in the Western Region. The main goal of this new branch is to contribute to a reduction of Children in street situations using an integrated approach of street work, prevention in communities, reintegration, and effective collaborations with different partners and stakeholders.

We are seeking a passionate and versatile professional to join our dynamic team, who will champion the cause of Street Connected Children at the new branch.

The Role

  • The Social Worker is expected to work with Street connected Children, Families, and Communities.

In the role of Field Social Worker, you shall:

  • Identify and visit hotspots for Street Connected Children in the Western Region and prescribe distinctive interventions for each case identified.
  • Adopt best practices and follow procedures to reunify street-connected children with their families.
  • Trace families of Clients and assess them for reintegration.
  • Write comprehensive Social Inquiry Reports of cases identified.
  • Manage the transition processes involved in moving children from street situations to their families for successful reintegration.
  • Strengthen families to function optimally as primary agents of socialization.
  • Improve access of Clients and their families to existing social services.
  • Identify, establish, and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders to harness resources that strengthen clients, their families, and communities.
  • Visit reunified children and their families regularly and plan best interventions for successful reintegration.
  • Counsel Clients and their families to achieve maximum results from interventions.
  • Hold workshops that strengthen and enhance the lifestyles of street-connected children and their families.
  • Prepare activity reports for discussion and informed decisions.

In the role of Community Social Worker, you shall:

  • Identify migration trends and factors that push/pull children to street situations in the Western Region and plan sustainable solutions.
  • Explore community resources and services available and support Clients and their families to gain access to them.
  • Work with community stakeholders to retain reunified children in communities, identify potential street-connected children and implement measures to prevent their migration to the street.
  • Hold community workshops for diverse groups to enhance their quality of life.
  • Organize community meetings/activities for targeted interventions that make reintegration sustainable.
  • Engender systemic change to address social exclusion through strong engagement with community leaders and creating appropriate platforms for dialogue.
  • Maintain relationships with partners to harness resources for community development.
  • Counsel reunified/street-connected children and their families to achieve maximum results from interventions.
  • Be a good ambassador of the ideals of Chance for Children in the communities you work.

Required Skills or Experience

To thrive in this role, you should have:

  • A minimum of First Degree/Diploma in Social Work, Sociology, Integrated Development Studies, Community Development, Guidance and Counseling, Youth in Development Work or Population and Family Life Education.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with children/families/communities in a Non-Profit Organization.
  • In-depth knowledge of the phenomenon of street-connected children and families in Ghana.
  • Understanding of national and international laws, conventions, charters, and policies regulating work with Children.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and practical skills in community/youth development work.
  • Knowledge of child activities in fishing and commerce in the Western Region.
  • Understanding of migration trends in and out of the Western Region.
  • Understanding of the socio-cultural environment, including family systems in the Western Region of Ghana (a plus).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in casework, groupwork and community facilitation tools
  • Familiarity with child-centered approaches to find solutions for street connected children.
  • Working knowledge of database management software (a plus).
  • Ability to speak English plus any of the following languages – (Twi, Konkomba, Ewe, Dagbani)
  • Excellent skills in building trusted relationships and bonds with children and families.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
