Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
The Protocol Officer is the main liaison between the British High Commission and key government organisations; facilitating and managing relationships to ensure UK-based staff obtain all necessary documentation upon arrival in country and when leaving the country.
Main elements of the job:
- Liaison with Government Institutions
- MFA – laising with MFA on UK-based staff arrival and departure, arranging clearance of personal effects of UK- based and official shipments for the Mission, applying for Diplomatic ID cards and driving licences, organising allocation of CD numbers to private and official vehicles, and securing authorisation to sell duty free vehicles on open market.
- Customs, Excise & Preventive Service (CEPS) – processing of all necessary Customs paperwork for goods clearance and liaising with Customs on all other Customs related issues.
- DVLA – Processing of driving licences, International Driver’s Permit, registration of vehicles, change of ownership of vehicles and all DVLA related matters.
- Immigration Service – Securing country clearance/entry visas, as well as managing all immigration issues including the processing of residence and work permits for all expatriate staff.
- GCAA/Airport Duties – Where appropriate, arranging diplomatic airport passes, VVIP passes and the use of VVIP lounge, tarmac access, meeting and seeing off British Government dignitaries and the High Commission’s important guests.
- Interior Ministry – obtaining Police clearance on some exports such as firearms, etc, as and when the need arises. Securing clearance for work permits for Locally Engaged (LE) staff with foreign passpo
- Other government institutions - as and when the need arises.
Freight Handling/Briefing
- Processing the necessary documentation for clearance and export of UAF and heavy baggage for UK-based staff and consignments for the Mission
- Liaising with the Mission’s clearing agents when required and ensuring all process are correctly followed and all rules/legislation adhered to.
- Briefing officers on arrival and ensuring all documentations are submitted and processed before depature
Facilitating Visa Applications from Other Foreign Missions in Ghana
Processing the necessary documentation for visa applications for UK-based and LE staff (for official travel).

Required Skills or Experience
The successful applicant is likely to have one or more of the following:
- A university degree in business administration, logistics management, political/social sciences or a related field
- Experience using Oracle data base
- Experience in a similar position will be considered an asset
