Job Description

Senior DPO – Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Senior D.P.O. & Senior Watch keeper when vessel in DP and/or in conventional mode.  Responsible for the safe operation of the shift and in charge of the DP Operation.  Responsible for safe navigation and conduct of the vessel as a Watch keeper when not in DP.
  • Mentor Trainee D.P.O & D.P.O’s.
  • Ensure that the DP watch is conducted in accordance with MTS & IMCA recommendations and in accordance with the Company DP Philosophy and/or client requirements.  
  • Ensure the DP system is operating correctly and report any defects in accordance to the company’s expectations.  
  • Participate in ensuring that all DP checks, trials and tests are conducted to the expectations of the company.
  • Responsible for providing full DP cover and watch keeping when the vessel is in DP mode also to include:-
    • Monitor and provide the relevant communication / information to the Marine Management onboard the vessel in respect to the DP equipment and DP operational         issues.
    • In conjunction with vessel Marine Management prepare and assist in completion of relevant ISM documentation and logs as required.
    • Ensure all DP equipment is fully functional and fully maintained in accordance with     the Company requirements.
    • Monitor and control all vessel movements whilst in DP. Closely monitor vessels     position and DP status, paying particular attention to position maintenance, sensors, thruster response and performance and available power whilst operations are being conducted.
    • Maintain shift handover book relating to the DP operation / Navigational Watch and any system or weather concerns which may affect the operation.
    • Keep a close watch on the weather and make allowances for present and expected     weather trends or deterioration.  Inform Barge Master if conditions are likely to         deteriorate sufficiently to abandon operations, differ from the forecast or that any     unexpected weather may give reason for concern.
    • Monitor other vessel movements within the area, communicate with the D.P.O. should they cause concern and take whatever action necessary to safeguard the vessel     personnel and structure before the Barge Master arrives in the Pilot House/Control         Room.
    • Ensure all other navigation equipment is operating correctly.  Prepare Pilot House for sea as required by statute and also report all defects.  Maintain Bridge /Control Room         in seagoing condition and navigational readiness at all times.
    • Ensure the upkeep, updating and correcting of all navigational charts and nautical publications.  Ensure corrections are up to date and navigational warnings displayed. Ensure vessel has onboard all charts/publications for the voyage and working location.
    • Assist with the maintenance of lifesaving and firefighting equipment as directed by the Barge Master.
    • Be responsible for the upkeep, updating and correcting of all navigational charts and nautical publications.  Ensure corrections are up to date and navigational warnings displayed. Ensure vessel has onboard all charts/publications for the voyage and         working location.
    • Liaise with heads of department over running of the vessel/routines especially areas which conflict between DP operations and vessel operations. Permit to Work     coordination and administration.
    • Assist with any administration which may be incurred by the vessel, Company or     client under the direction of the Barge Master.
    • Respond to alarms and emergency signals. Initiate alarms and emergency signals in accordance with the vessel’s emergency response procedures. Emergency Duties as     stated on the vessel’s Station Bill
  • Carry out other duties as directed by the Barge Master.
  • To complete Stena Drilling’s Competence Assurance Scheme for the position within 12 months, on completion of probationary period.

  • Work according to and promote Stena Drilling’s HS&E Policies and Procedures as well as fully commit to preventing any damage to the environment.
  • Responsible and accountable to conduct their tasks in full compliance with Stena Drilling Limited procedures.
  • Comply with Stena Drilling procedures for management of risk and Safe Behaviour Programme; ensuring that a suitable and sufficient risk assessment is carried out for all work activities.
  • Participate in the STOP system, complete and submit cards after discussions. Monitor and coach crew members to participate in STOP and carry out STOP audits.
  • Promote Stena Drilling’s “Golden Rules” and the rig’s “House Rules” during team discussions.
  • Attend and participate in Tool Box Talks.
  • Ensure work site is safe and that all tools used are in a satisfactory condition.
  • Ensure that storage, handling and use of chemicals are done in accordance with procedures.
  • Ensure equipment is secured to prevent movement due to wind or rig motion.
  • Ensure familiar with correct use, type and location of all Oil Spill Equipment.
  • Comply with Stena Drilling’s waste segregation policy.

Training

  • Undertake onshore and offshore training in order to comply with the Training Matrix.
  • Complete Stena Drilling’s Competence Assurance Scheme within 12 months of being assigned.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Marine Certificate of Competence (CoC) / (CeC) - Class 1 or Class 2 (Deck) Certificate of Competency
  • 10 years relevant experience
  • DP Certificate (Unlimited and  tied to CoC)
  • Seafarers Medical if Marine Ticket held -  Note CoC/CeC invalid if medical expires

  • Proficiency in Security Awareness 
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • TAG

  • STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
  • Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than FRB
  • Previously served on a DP drilling vessel or have undergone supervised training up to the required standard.
  • Previous experience as a D.P.O.
  • Kongsberg - HiPAP LBL Operator
  • Kongsberg - HAIN Operator Course
