Company Profile

Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. CRS works to save, protect, and transform lives in need in more than 100 countries, without regard to race, religion or nationality. CRS’ relief and development work is accomplished through programs of emergency response, HIV, health, agriculture, education, microfinance and peacebuilding. CRS Ghana was established in 1958, a year after Ghana gained independence. In Ghana, CRS works with local partners to tackle poverty on several fronts including improving health and nutrition; increasing access to safe water and improved sanitation; promoting agriculture to enhance food security; and increasing financial assets through Savings and Internal Lending Communities.

Job Description

1. Background
Ghana faces significant challenges in achieving improved sanitation and hygiene indicators. This has a significant impact on child survival, health, and wellbeing. UNICEF (2010) reports that more than 4,000 Ghanaian children die each year from diarrhoea, a disease that would have otherwise been easily preventable with better sanitation and hygiene practices. Additionally, in the northern parts of Ghana, open defecation remains rampant. In 2015, UNICEF reported that 89% of the population in the Upper East region and 72% of the population in the Northern region practice open defecation.

Through the Integrated Community Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Project (ICOWASH), CRS will scale up promising practices from the recently completed Integrated Sanitation, Hygiene and Nutrition for Education (I-SHINE) project (implemented from January 2014 to June 2017 in various communities and schools), while incorporating new activities based on community feedback, industry best practices, and lessons learned from the I-SHINE project. The goal of the ICOWASH project is to ‘improve health and wellbeing of 152,334 rural adults and children in West Mamprusi and Talensi districts in Northern Ghana’.

The 3-years’ ICOWASH project (August 2017 to July 2020) funded by the Helmsley Charitable Trust, will address WASH needs at the household, school, and healthcare facility (HCF) levels to improve the health of people in West Mamprusi and Talensi districts. The ICOWASH project will have a holistic programming approach to these districts, ensuring that all members of the community, at the household level, in schools, and at health facilities have sustained access to safe water, and improved sanitation, and are practicing good hygiene.

In line with this, CRS is looking for a consultant to produce Behavior Change Communications (BCC) messages in video format for schools and communities to promote hygiene and improved sanitation behaviors. The films/videos to be produced will include short video clips (on drama) and video documentaries such as interviews, meetings and best WASH practices to promote hygiene and improved sanitation behaviors in CRS supported schools and communities.

2. Purpose of the Assessment
The consultant is required to produce short video clips to promote hygiene and improved sanitation practices in the form of dramas, documentary, interviews, case studies, music clips, animations, jingles etc.

2.1 Specifically, the consultant will be required to undertake the following;

  • To produce one short video clip each, of high resolution (minimum-720x1280) between 5-10 minutes length, on hygiene and sanitation promotion in the form of drama, Sketches/skits, music clips, animations and jingles; on Handwashing at critical times, open defecation, household water storage and treatment and environmental cleanliness.
  • To produce one high resolution video documentary each, (minimum resolution-720x1280, maximum length-15 minutes) on best WASH practices in ICOWASH supported schools; on Handwashing at critical times, open defecation, household water storage and treatment and environmental cleanliness.
  • To prepare scripts and narration for the project documentaries and videos developed;
  • To provide background music for the videos and documentaries developed;
  • To narrate and edit the raw video footages for producing the final videos;
  • To package the videos/documentaries in soft and hard copies (CDs) in mp4 formats.

3. Methodology of the assignment
The selected consulting firm would propose the methodology and modalities for carrying out the assignment. In this regard, the consultant is expected to produce and share with CRS, an inception report, detailing their understanding of the assignment, time schedule, planned activities, suggested methods and potential interviewees and groups to use in the development of the videos, as well as how they perceive to present preliminary and final results to be approved by CRS.

4. Equipment for the Assignment
No equipment will be purchased or provided by the CRS or the ICOWASH project. Any equipment needed to complete this assignment will be provided by the service provider.

5. Expected Deliverables

  • Submission of final master videos (short video clips and documentaries as specified in section 2.1 above) in hard copy
  • Submit electronic copies of videos (short video clips and documentaries as specified in section 2.1 above) in mp4 format before the deadline of the consultancy.
  • Submit raw footages and pictures captured in project areas.

6. Timeframe
