Job Description

  • Job Title:     Welder  
  • Department:   Maintenance
  • Reports to:   Mechanical Engineering Supervisor
  • Direct reports: Mechanical Engineering Technician Assistants

Job Purpose:
Assemble and weld metal parts/components on the production line.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Assist the mechanical engineering supervisor to plan and direct all aspects of mechanical engineering activities within the plant.
  • Execute assigned jobs related to mechanical engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with organization's established policies and objectives.
  • Execute the design of systems, machines, etc. as directed by his superior.
  • Execute fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products.
  • Regular research of new practices and procedures in the mechanical engineering field.
  • Inspect, isolate, troubleshoot and repair mechanical malfunctions of mechanical systems including motors, pumps, conveyor rollers and belts, gear reducers/gearboxes, mechanisms, vehicles, etc. using the appropriate test instruments and tools.
  • Test Mechanical equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable safety and regulation codes.
  • Monitor and Inspect related work performed by contractors for adherence to binding codes of practice and requirements.
  • Participate in the maintenance and operations of the mechanical workshop.
  • Analyze and interpret test information to resolve design related problems.
  • Place requisition of materials and spares from the stores for replacements ensuring that damaged/old parts are returned to the stores. This shall be done after discussing with his immediate supervisor
  • Clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Maintains appropriate service and repair records in accordance with Standard Operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist and serve as back up to other employees in the department.
  • Assist the electrical section in carrying out their duties when the need be.
  • Train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area

Required Skills or Experience

  • Education – A minimum of an NVTI/City and Guild grade II or equivalent in mechanical engineering is required. HND in Mechanical Engineering is preferred
  • Experience – A minimum of 3 years working experience in a related field/position (industrial mechanical technician). Past employment in a food processing establishment is required. Familiarity with conveyor systems and pumps is a must.
  • Good written and spoken English 
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering theories, methods and principles, tools, equipment, and systems used in the mechanical profession.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and practice codes and regulations pertaining to the mechanical profession. 
  • Knowledge of methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of electronic and mechanical equipment

  • Ability to read and comprehend plans and blueprints as appropriate to profession.

  • Ability to train and direct the work of other classified staff in the section.
  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationship.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.
