Job Description

TERMS OF REFERENCE 
Establishment of Compost Production Unit for Smallholder Cocoa Farmers in Bia West District of the Western North Region
 
 
BACKGROUND
SNV has been present in Ghana since 1992 and is currently implementing the shaded cocoa agroforestry systems (SCAFS) project with funding support from the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The SCAFS project to promote sustainable intensification of cocoa systems for enhanced conservation and sustainable use of forest resources in the high forest zone of Ghana. SCAFS has made significant achievements by supporting 2,232 farmers to replant their overaged and unproductive farms into cocoa agroforestry systems; established two (2) Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs); and established baseline and hotspots for deforestation monitoring in Juaboso and Bia West districts of the Western North Region.
 
In the order to promote sustainable soil management practices in the replanted farms, the SCAFS project is seeking to support a compost producing enterprise to establish a compost production unit in the project area to support soil management requirement in the replanted cocoa farms. SNV is seeking for a suitably qualified individual / firm to establish a pilot compost production unit with capacity to serve fifteen (15) cocoa farming communities, in the Bia West district of the Western North region. 
 
OBJECTIVE
Support a small-scale compost production enterprise to establish a pilot compost production unit to serve at least 15 smallholder cocoa communities in the Bia West district.
 
SPECIFIC TASKS
  • Conduct feasibility studies on farmer demand for compost and feed stocks availability (including potential substitutes) for the production of compost manure for smallholder cocoa systems, taking into consideration the soil nutrient requirement of cocoa soils in the project area.  
  • Identify a centralised location to set up the compost production unit
  • Set up and operate functional compost production unit based on current demand, and with the potential to expand to meet increasing demand.
  • Supply relevant equipment/logistics for operation and maintenance of the compost production unit.
  • Liaise with the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED), and the Cocoa Research Institute (CRIG) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to facilitate education and awareness of the benefits of compost among target smallholder farmers. 
  • Develop a sustainability plan for the compost production unit. 
DELIVERABLES
  • A detailed report on feasibility studies for demand for compost manure and availability of feed stock to run the compost production unit.
  • An operational compost manure production unit serving the needs of smallholder cocoa farmers in Bia Wet district. 
  • Operational guide and simple maintenance schedule for the compost unit
  • A report detailing the design and operational processes for the establishment of the compost production unit.

Required Skills or Experience

The following knowledge and skills are preferred:
  • A reputable individual / firm with requisite expertise in compost production for various soil type. 
  • At least five (5) years’ experiences in the compost production preferably for the tree crop sector
  • Demonstrated examples of previous assignments in establishing and operationalising compost units as business. 
  • Willingness to work closely with other relevantion cocoa rehabilitation programmes including public and private sector initiatives in the district. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and background in soil nutrient requirements in cocoa systems specific to the various soil types and compositions.
