Job Description

Job Purpose

AWA’s Aviation Security Manager shall act in the place of Director of Aviation Security during his absence. His primary responsibility is to ensure compliance with all applicable sections of the National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP) as it pertains to AWA’s security responsibilities. These include but not limited to the following aviation security tasks

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  1. Notify the Director of Aviation Security or the relevant law enforcement officer of any irregular or unusual passengers/travel documents, suspicious behaviour, or potential or actual act of unlawful interference at the airport or on any of AWA’s airplanes operating to or from Ghana.
  2. Ensure that passengers have identity documents and appropriate visas consistent with the name under which travel has been booked and issue an accurate boarding pass for entry to the sterile/restricted area.
  3. Protect all hold baggage from unauthorized access and interference from the point at which the hold baggage is accepted by AWA staff until it is securely loaded onto the aircraft.
  4. Verify and document that all hold baggage items loaded on to each aircraft are positively matched to a passenger on that aircraft and that all other loaded on to the aircraft are specifically authorized by AWA for carriage.
  5. Conduct and document appropriate pre-flight aircraft inspections, searches, or checks to ensure that no weapons, explosives, or dangerous items have been left or hidden on the aircraft.
  6. Verify that all persons entering the aircraft have the proper identification and are authorized to enter the aircraft.
  7. Ensure that all catering items delivered to the aircraft are authorized and conduct a check on all catering items for any foreign objects that may be concealed within or on the catering carts.
  8. Assume responsibility for control of persons and vehicles in the immediate vicinity of an AWA aircraft.
  9. Ensure that aircraft is properly locked and secured if left unattended and that the locks or security methods have not been interfered with or opened when opening the aircraft for service.
  10. Comply with all aspects of the cargo security programme.
  11. Ensure that all AWA staff and contractors comply with this security programme and the Airport Security Programme (ASP).
  12. Ensure that all access to sterile/restricted zones from AWA offices and facilities are properly locked or guarded and used only by AWA staff.
  13. Manage incidents as they occur until the arrival of a law enforcement officer or the airport operator’s security staff.
  14. Ensure the safe handling of weapons and other prohibited items.
  15. Collect witness information and retain evidence pending the arrival of a law enforcement officer.
  16. Represent AWA in handling passenger complaints in the absence of the Airport Operations Manager.
  17. Verify the credentials of all authorized armed security officials prior to boarding any AWA aircraft.

Required Skills or Experience

  • A minimum of a Degree is required
  • At least 5-7 years working experience in aviation security is a must
  • Advanced Knowledge of Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent time management, organization, prioritization and must have ability to multi-task
  • Proactive orientation
  • Confidential, Committed, Motivated & Adherent to policies & procedures

Professional Qualification

Prospective applicants must have ICAO/IATA Diploma in Aviation Security Management and at least one of the following professional qualifications;

  1. Airport/airlines/cargo security operations
  2. Aviation security national inspectors training course
  3. Aviation security national auditors training course
  4. ISO 9001 Auditor/Lead Auditor Training Course

Skills and Competence

  1. Have good general health, reasonable strength and no physical incapacity which would prevent them from undertaking the normal range of aviation security duties
  2. Have strong observational skills
  3. Be free from dependence on alcohol or illegal substances.
