Job Description

Global Communities seeks a Deputy Chief of Party and Natural Resource and Environmental Management Specialist for an anticipated five-year USAID-funded Agriculture and Natural Resources Management activity in Ghana. The project will i) improve resource management on a landscape scale; ii) improve alternative livelihoods, especially those that promote more value being placed on natural areas and which are nutrition sensitive; iii) better manage water resources for human and productive uses and iv) improve the governance of these resources at the community, district, regional and inter-regional levels.

Responsibilities include:

  • The DCOP/NRM specialist will support the Chief of Party in assigned duties and specifically those tasks related to the improved management and conservation of selected watersheds and biodiversity corridors in the Volta Basin and the strengthening of ecosystem services.
  • He/she will be responsible for promoting community based natural resource management and facilitating cross border coordination and better protection and management of the corridors.
  • He/she will ensure that the project meets all USAID environmental requirements and complies with USAID environmental policies and regulations.
  • Providing oversight of an ecosystem valuation study and the development of a primary baseline of carbon stocks as well as providing material and technical support and maintaining consistent communication exchange with the other programs in the targeted areas.

Required Skills or Experience

  • MSc degree in an environment or natural resource related field
  • At least 7 years’ professional experience in building relations with rural communities through the extension of technologies, participatory planning, training and monitoring.
  • Demonstrated success in using CBNRM and related best practices for improving livelihoods and enhancing the management of natural areas.
  • Experience in building capacity of public agency personnel to more effectively meet the requirements of their position
  • Experience in the environmental compliance on projects and working with host country agencies.
  • Protected area management experience.
  • Experience with implementing project level climate change adaptation and mitigation technologies.
  • M&E experience for NRM and environment projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to hold staff accountable for doing their jobs.
