Job Description

Global Communities seeks a Governance, Land and Conflict Specialist for an anticipated five-year USAID-funded Agriculture and Natural Resources Management activity in Ghana. The project will i) improve resource management on a landscape scale; ii) improve alternative livelihoods, especially those that promote more value being placed on natural areas and which are nutrition sensitive; iii) better manage water resources for human and productive uses and iv) improve the governance of these resources at the community, district, regional and inter-regional levels.

Responsibilities include:

The Governance, Land and Conflict Specialist will be responsible for implementing and managing the governance and land management activities and team for an anticipated program to improve natural resource management (NRM), alternative livelihoods, water management and resource governance in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions of Ghana.

Primary responsibilities will also include:

  • Oversee implementation of project activities designed to improve the access and rights of farmers and communities to land and natural resources. This includes work aimed to develop a clear hierarchy of resource access and use rights amongst the communities.
  • Manage activities that specifically target improving women’s access and rights to land and natural resource management.
  • Oversee conflict mitigation activities around land and natural resource management; including assisting with the planning and development of land boundaries for project interventions in order to avoid conflict.
  • Collaborate and liaise with communities to develop effective and peaceful land use procedures.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher governance, land tenure, dispute/conflict resolution or related fields is required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience working on development projects that focus on democracy and governance including land tenure issues, and conflict resolution.
  • Experience in the legal and traditional dimensions of governance and land use in Northern Ghana.
  • Experience working with a diverse group of technically skilled experts within the context of a project team.
