Job Description

Background and Overall Scope

The Global SPRING Project is a five-year cooperative agreement funded by USAID. SPRING’s overarching vision is to reduce undernutrition, prevent stunting, and reduce the prevalence of anemia among women and children, especially in the first 1000 days of life. By providing state-of-the-art technical support, SPRING aims to strengthen country efforts to scale up high-impact nutrition practices and policies to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes. The SPRING project implementation team consists of JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., Helen Keller International, International Food Policy Research Institute, Save the Children, and The Manoff Group.  SPRING/Ghana commenced operations from June 2014 and is complementing other projects under the Feed-the-Future country strategy that is contributing to USAID/Ghana’s goal of reducing the prevalence of stunting and anemia in northern Ghana.

SPRING/Ghana is collaborating with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Nutrition Department and partners, to reposition and prioritize the anemia agenda at the national, regional and district levels in Ghana. SPRING/Ghana is leveraging the global SPRING technical capacity and experience in anemia programming to complement and help strengthen the multi-sectoral program strategy approach. The Anemia Program Specialist is responsible for coordinating with the GHS on SPRING/Ghana’s technical and programmatic approach to implement anemia control activities that involves the participation of several other stakeholders.  This position will provide technical leadership, capacity building for quality anemia program, and programmatic operational support.

Responsibilities

  • Support the SPRING/Ghana country management and other technical staff to define or refine SPRING/Ghana’s nutrition strategy that addresses stunting and anemia
  • Contribute to the development of technical resource materials, including guidelines, training manuals, curricula and job aids, as necessary
  • Closely collaborate with social and behavior change communication (SBCC) team in planning, implementing and monitoring of actions in community mobilization and advocacy efforts on anemia
  • Work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to track performance against set indicators for anemia and document best practices
  • Work with Global SPRING Anemia Team or SPRING Technical Assistance providers
  • Provide coordination on anemia programs’ with the GHS nutrition department at the national, regional and district levels
  • Provide timely technical and program reports, documents and proposals as requested
  • Review and refine documents/outputs produced by consultants and other SPRING/Ghana staff
  • Work with other technical  and district team members to identify opportunities for further strengthening uptake of health and nutrition services and other programs by target households, groups and communities to reduce prevalence of anemia
  • Identify, develop or promote other anemia control thematic areas through engagement with development actors and district partners
  • Develop and sustain partner relationships, including with academic institutions and technical institutions working in nutrition
  • Monitor Anemia interventions and budget expenditure in line with annual workplans
  • Support capacity within the project and with collaborating partners and form partnership with other actors to anemia program operational and research opportunities and the promotion of evidence-based practices

Required Skills or Experience

  • Degree or professional qualification in health, medicine or related discipline
  • Master’s degree in public health or advance degree in related  clinical science
  • Experience in research or program design and implementation
  • At least 10 years progressive  experience in program management
  • Experience of working with the Ghana Health Service (GHS)
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with government departments
  • Strong presentational or communication skills
  • Computer literacy and relevant program application skills
