Context
The West Africa Governance & Economic Sustainability in Extractive Areas (WAGES) is jointly implemented by World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Centre d’étude et de coopération internationale (CECI) in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Guinea. The project aims to break the vicious circle in which local communities, especially women and youth, are excluded from the benefits of mining investments. Additionally, the project works to ensure the participation of local communities, and specifically, the integration of women and youth in the governance of natural resources, entrepreneurship and the sustainable development of these areas. Working in partnership with communities, local government, mining companies, and other stakeholders, the project will enable communities, particularly women and youth, to maximize the socio-economic benefits from extractive resource investment in West Africa.

The project’s principal areas of focus include local governance, sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and regional knowledge-sharing on development best practices in mining areas. The expected results of the project include: Increased access to employment and revenue generation opportunities and control over the benefits that result for women and youth in target communities; ii) Strengthened sub-national governments and local institutions to leverage opportunities to better enable communities, particularly women and youth, to participate in and benefit from local development arising from natural resource development; and iii) Increased informed dialogue on inclusive and sustainable local economic development and governance strategies in extractive areas that benefit local communities in West Africa, and especially women and youth.

Purpose of Assignment
A key part of the WAGES project is the collection of best practises and lessons to be disseminated to our donors, stakeholders and communities. This exchange of information and knowledge building will help these audiences fully understand the challenges and successes of the WAGES project, as well as serve as documentation for future similar projects. This long-form storytelling medium will visually highlight the WAGES project while explaining complex development issues and the impact of the WAGES project work in Ghana.

Building off the foundation of previous videos completed for the WAGES project, this documentary will introduce the WAGES project and show its work through interviews with beneficiaries, partners, training sessions, and field visits. It will break the story down into four components: economic development, local governance, environment and green economy, and gender and social inclusion. The documentary will highlight our partnerships with the Wassa East District Assembly (WEDA), Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality (PHVM), National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) Ghana, African Aurora Business Network (AABN), etc.

The video footage will also be used in smaller videos (shorter edited doc and 4 issue-focused videos), including videos featuring local languages in order to make it accessible to our community beneficiaries. Overall, these videos will be a compelling way to tell the story of the WAGES project areas and will allow the project to reach new audiences through online video-sharing platforms.

Target Audience: WAGES donors and stakeholders; Strategic Partners (NAC, WIM, WEDA, PHVM, etc.); NGO, Environmental agencies, Economic agencies in Ghana; WAGES beneficiaries
