We bring together a diverse network of students, volunteers, schools, governments, and businesses who share this vision. Together, we develop solutions in education, economic opportunities, and empowerment to overcome inequality and exclusion for youth around the world, particularly young women and young refugees. WUSC currently works in 25 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, with an annual budget of approximately CAD $40 million. We have over 90 staff in our Ottawa office, and over 200 people overseas implementing 16 development projects in collaboration with donors such as Global Affairs Canada, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Mastercard Foundation and the African Development Bank.

The INVEST Project
The Innovation in Non-Traditional Vocational Education and Skills Training (INVEST) is a 5 year initiative that will build sustainable pathways to enhanced economic empowerment, well-being and inclusive growth for 5,000 urban poor young women in Accra, Kumasi, and Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. Working in high growth sectors, the initiative will test and scale innovative, sustainable models to improve the enabling environment, reduce gender-specific barriers to women’s economic participation, and enhance access to decent work for marginalized women in non-traditional sectors.   
 
Nature and Scope
Under the direction of the Gender Advisor, the National Volunteer will contribute to delivery of key gender interventions including supporting local women’s rights partners to carry out outreach and advocacy campaigns for the INVEST project in Ghana.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support capacity building of recipient organizations on scaling advocacy and engagement initiatives using gender centric approaches;
  • Support the development of  curriculum and materials for capacity building of innovation grant recipients;
  • Support coordination and supervision of innovation challenge initiatives support;
  • Document gender related successes and lessons learnt;
  • Promote/support internal organisational learning opportunities, including team capacity building, gender conversations etc;
  • Create GESI resources and tools to assist staff in effectively integrate GE in their work;
  • Work with the project team to develop tools to capture gender related successes and outcomes;
  • Support the establishment of systems that enable a community of learning to enhance lessons sharing and impact;
  • Participate in project partners meetings to share experiences;
  • Participate in pre-assignment online or in person training;
  • Ensure the representation and engagement of women in all activities and program benefits
  • Work with project partner organisations to provide guidance to their communications and outreach activities;
  • Submit volunteer timesheets, reports and deliverables as required by the project communication team and partner organization assigned to by WUSC.
 
PARTNER DESCRIPTION
ABANTU for Development is a women’s rights organisation that exists to strengthen the capacity of women to participate in decision-making at all levels, to influence policies from a gender perspective and to address inequalities and injustices in social relations. It seeks to achieve this through advocacy, training, research institutional development and networking with other organisations committed to the same principles. The vision of ABANTU is for a world where empowered women and men advocate collectively on gender inequalities through promoting transformational leadership and development for a just society. WUSC will collaborate with Abantu to expand advocacy and outreach solutions through the INVEST project to enable young women to have increased access to decent jobs in non-traditional trade areas. 

Required Skills or Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in International development, Gender Equality or Social Science or other relevant field
  • A minimum of two years of post-national service experience in development sector, including experience working alongside and championing local women’s rights and/or youth focused CSOs/development actors;
  • Excellent capacity building skills with experience in effective training and facilitation
  • Knowledge of accountability, protection, women and children’s rights frameworks and best practices
  • A commitment to local capacity building and ability to engage local stakeholders in designing local initiatives and implementation
  • A commitment to gender equality, youth inclusion, and international volunteering
  • Experience with group facilitation and trainings, including content development
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Comfortable using online working platforms
  • Ability to work independently as part of a remote working group
  • Access to a reliable internet connection (for remote working where needed)
  • Flexibility, adaptability, excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Written and oral fluency in English 
  • Knowledge of a local language will be considered an asset.
