Recruitment of service provider to support green SMEs in eco-friendly branding and packaging
 
 
Overview and background
The Boosting Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities in Ghana (GrEEn) project is a four-year project implemented in the Ashanti and Western regions of Ghana. 
 
With the overall objective of contributing to addressing the root causes of irregular migration by supporting sustainable and climate resilient local economies through the creation of green jobs and promoting green enterprise development in regions of departure, transit and return for migrants, GrEEn is targeted at women, youth, returnees and Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
 
Primarily funded by the European Union through its Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF) for Africa, GrEEn is being implemented by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). 
 
GrEEn focuses on three specific objectives:
  • To support the transition of local economies to green and climate resilient development.
  • To improve the employability and entrepreneurship capabilities of selected people by matching them with market opportunities and mentoring into (self-)employment and enterprise development, with a focus on green and climate resilient local economies.
  • To create and strengthen local ecosystems that support youth (self-)employment and the growth of Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
 
Purpose of the assignment
SMEs in GrEEn’s Incubation and Acceleration Programmes will be supported to achieve operational and technical efficiency in Agriculture, Renewable Energy and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene to attain investment readiness.  
 
For this purpose, the GrEEn project is in need of a service provider to support selected SMEs with implementing effective branding and sustainability packaging for their products.  
 
Scope of work
The consultancy firm or team of experts will carry out the following activities:
  1. Organise two virtual group training sessions on branding and packaging protocols for GrEEn SMEs including but not limited to how to identify, evaluate and implement packaging strategies as green SMEs, introduce the concept of sustainability packaging, etc
  2. Work with at least 15 SMEs and their staff (through virtual/ in-person meetings, for 5 days per SME) to develop action plans and implement eco-friendly and sustainable packaging strategies for their products. The 15 SMEs will be predetermined by the GrEEn project team.
  3. Link the SMEs to potential packaging material suppliers, preferably from Ghana and West Africa
  4. Based on the findings from the group trainings and support to individual SMEs, propose a list of eco-friendly packaging and/or product presentation alternatives for SMEs as opposed to their current practices 
  5. Provide a list of potential suppliers (from Ghana and West Africa) of eco-friendly packaging materials for the assigned SMEs
  6. Provide recommendations for GrEEn and its partner hubs on how to integrate eco-friendly packaging into the incubation/acceleration and mentoring support provided to green SMEs.
Timeline  
  • The assignment will begin from 27th September, 2021 and end by 31st of December 2021. 
  • The level of effort is estimated to be around 75 working days, including reporting.
Deliverables
  1. Brief report (inception report) outlining the approach to the assignment and a detailed work plan to be agreed with GrEEn team at the beginning of the assignment (latest one week after contract signature)
  2. Training materials in the form of PPT slides
  3. Group training sessions for the GrEEn Incubation and Acceleration SMEs (25)
  4. On-site support for 15 SMEs
  5. List of suppliers of eco-friendly packaging materials 
  6. Individual reports on the SMEs with recommendations on re-design and use the appropriate eco-friendly packaging materials for their products, as well as the agreed action plans
  7. Final summary report on the assignment with recommendations for the GrEEn project and its partners.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Packaging specialist with at least 3 years’ professional experience in sustainability packaging. 
  • Proven experience in sustainability packaging consulting for SMEs.
  • Experience in providing branding advice to SMEs, in particular for green and eco-friendly businesses.
