Job Description

VIS - Volontariato internazionale per lo sviluppo, in partnership with Ai.Bi. Friends of Children Foundation, promotes the selection of a psychologist within the project “HOME - GHana, IvOry Coast, Sierra Leone: a network to welcoME and educate vulnerable minors” that aims at strengthening the public and private actors committed to promote child's wellbeing and prevent child abandonment.

The counseling psychologist selected will support abandoned children, children at risk of abandonment and youth, host in Child Protection Institutions or entered the alternative care system in Ghana, during the process of investigation, trial, rehabilitation and their reintegration into families.

The psychologist will be based in Ashaiman and s/he will work in relation to child protection and alternative care services. S/he will provide individual and group counseling, foster care family, plan training sessions, organize consultations and undertake clinical supervision.

Psychologist duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored psychological support and counselling to children dealing with the separation from their biological parents
  • Provide psychological support to sexually abused children, trafficked children and children with special needs
  • Support children to overcome trauma and develop self-esteem and resilience
  • Conduct psychological analyses and assessments of the children in moral distress
  • Prepare children and adolescents for reintegration into their biological families or for placement into foster or adoptive family and for their integration into the society
  • Prepare children and families for the transition to a family care: children need to be prepared by taking into consideration their age and capacities, regardless of the type of family placement
  • Monitor the children placed in foster care system or reintegrated into their families according to the instructions given by the Director of the Child Protection/Alternative Care Institutions and the recommendations made by the Project Manager
  • Support children to make life books and/or memory boxes to ensure that they can know their roots and background and understand why they are in an alternative care institute (Child Protection /Residential Home Centre)
  • Conduct initial psychological diagnosis and write a proper diagnosis for each child
  • Write report on psychological follow-up every two months
  • Develop and write methodological notes and an action plan
  • Write final diagnosis for each child at the end of the service
  • Write a final report service and a final impact report
  • Work under the supervision and in close collaboration with the staff of the Institutes to exchange knowledge and experiences
  • Keep good relationships with the partners of the project, local authorities, institutions and bodies in Ghana responsible for child protection and adoption
  • Manage an appropriate case load with an overview to ongoing care and undertake risk assessments when necessary
  • Maintain appropriate records of the assessments and casework undertaken: case load management, record keeping and file management
  • Develop and deliver training and facilitate workshops/talks
  • Practice his or her profession ethically in accordance with his or her professional boundaries and the regulatory frameworks of the relevant bodies
  • Attend team meetings
  • Build effective relationships with referrers and other key partner organisations
  • Engage actively in a multi-disciplinary team and contribute from her or his own professional perspective
  • Undertake any other duties expected by the role of a psychologist
  • Demonstrate a non-judgmental and non-bias attitude
  • Keep all the information related to the beneficiaries confidential
  • Maintain project documentation (plans and reports)
  • Respect the assigned tasks and ensure that deadlines are met
  • Act in accordance with VIS policies, conditions of service and procedures or with any olther directions given by VIS

Required Skills or Experience

  • Degree in Psychology
  • Practical experience in psychology of minimum 1 years with vulnerable children and/or young adults
  • English and local language essential: Twi, Ga/Dangme and Ewe
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, at least one of a range of evidence based approaches to trauma therapy, including trauma-based CBT, child-based CBT, Narrative Exposure Therapy, EMDR, play therapy, sand play therapy, art therapy, music therapy etc.
  • Counselling skills: empathetic listening, understanding of boundaries, building and maintain a trusting relationship, positive behavior
  • Basic knowledge of Windows package (word, excel, power point)
  • Excellent professional writing skills
  • Good knowledge of the legislation and practices of national and international adoption and of the child protection system in Ghana is an advantage
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to work in team, flexibility
