Job Description

Job Purpose
To coordinate and control the daily operations at the Assay Laboratory. This includes ensuring quality management at the Laboratory and the achievement of safe daily production targets in an efficient and effective manner in compliance with Company’s requirements, best practices and statutory obligations.
 
In summary, the Laboratory Group Leader is the main leader of the daily operation of the laboratory, responsible for the safety environment and quality management of the laboratory, ensuring that the laboratory's work complies with relevant regulations and quality management requirements; Manage and coordinate the workplace to ensure the smooth operation of the laboratory; Assist the laboratory manager in personnel allocation, work arrangement, and equipment configuration; Review assay data and results, responsible for providing feedback on quality inspection information to relevant departments and production sites, to provide a basis for solving quality problems and improving product quality; in line with the duties
below.
 
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensures that all employees under his/her supervision understand and comply with all health, safety, environmental, and human resource policies, as well as regulations applicable to all sections of the Assay Laboratory and conducts frequent laboratory inspections to identify and mitigate workplace hazards on a timely basis.
  • Assist the Assay Laboratory Manager with personnel allocation, work arrangements, and equipment configuration.
  • Provide Laboratory Technicians with training in analytical theoretical knowledge, laboratory procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Analyze and study the data and master various test methods and instrument operations to ensure the correctness and accuracy of test results.
  • Participate in the establishment and operation of the management system and be in charge of developing the internal audit plan and quality manual and procedure documents.
  • Ensure that the equipment is in a reliable standard condition during the effective period of use and verify the equipment during implementation.
  • Controls the calibration (or verification) of equipment to ensure that its measurements are accurate and traceable to the International System of Units (SI) and national standards of measurement.
  • Ensure the specification of test method selection, formulation, and confirmation procedures, and timely and effective control in case of deviation from the test method to ensure the validity of the test results.
  • Regulate the management of sample reception, marking, circulation (transportation), storage, protection, retention, and cleaning to ensure the integrity, representativeness, and validity of samples, and ensure scientific and fair test results.
  • Establish a confidentiality system to ensure that laboratory data and results are not disclosed. Ensuring confidentiality of technical information and trade secrets is essential.
  • Perform any other related duties based on the exigencies of the Company as assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Skills or Experience

Minimum qualification (s)
  • Degree in Chemistry, Industrial Laboratory, Minerals, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering, or in relevant discipline.
  • Minerals Commission Senior Processing Officer Certificate of Competency.
  • Professional Certificate or training in Analytical Laboratory Testing.
  • Valid Ghanaian Driver’s (minimum license B).
Experience (Minimum)
  • 7 years of hands-on experience in gold mineral processing with at least 5 years in similar/Senior Laboratory Analyst role with a proven track record in Analysis Laboratory Testing in a gold mining environment.
  • Experience in pre-treatment of fine-grained disseminated refractory gold ore, such as fine grinding and oxidation.
  • Demonstrated previous adherence and maximum commitment to following safety protocols and promoting workplace safety.
  • Experience in the construction, commissioning and technical transformation of new processing plants.

Knowledge (In-depth)

  • Familiar with the relevant regulatory requirements, and testing requirements in the Laboratory Management System documents.
  • Familiar with product/material testing standards; understand different testing methodologies and instrument operation.
  • Laboratory technology, analytical quality assurance, and laboratory management.
  • Solid theoretical knowledge, and practical management ability.

  • Able to operate a variety of laboratory equipment, including atomic absorption and fluorescence.
  • Ability to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of relevant test results.
  • Ability to evaluate relevant test results and understand the uncertainty of test results.
