Job Description

The Librarian would be responsible for acquiring, organizing, managing and distributing library resources and ensuring that library provision meets the needs of all its users.

Job functions

The Librarian’s main duties and responsibilities shall include the following:

  • Selecting, developing, cataloguing and classifying library resources
  • Answering readers’ enquiries.
  • Management of staff, including recruitment, training and/or supervisory duties.
  • Liaising with departmental academic staff, external organization and suppliers.
  • Ensuring that library services meet the needs of particular groups of users (e.g. staff, students, disabled students) managing budget and resources.
  • Supporting independent research and learning.
  • Developing IT facilities.
  • Assisting readers to use computer equipment, conduct literature searches, etc.
  • Promoting the library’s resources to user

 

Required Skills or Experience

  • The ideal candidate for the position of Librarian of the University, will be required to demonstrate high qualities of sound judgment, initiative, resourcefulness, precision and professionalism in his/her area of specialization and must:
  • Have a minimum of a postgraduate degree in library or information science or related studies.
  • Have served as a Deputy Librarian in a University or comparable grade in a similar institution/organization
  • Have served as a senior assistant librarian for at least six (6) years.
  • Be a scholar and a member of a Professional Body in a Librarianship/Information Science.
  • Be computer literate and be conversant with library software.

Terms of Appointment

  • The appointment shall be for a tenure of four (4) years in the first instance and may be renewed, subject to satisfactory performance, for another four (4) years.
  • Salary and conditions of service attached to the position is very attractive.
