Job Description

The Library Assistant is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the university library. This role involves assisting students, faculty, and staff with library services, maintaining library resources, and ensuring an organized and welcoming environment. The Library Assistant will play a crucial role in facilitating access to information and promoting the effective use of library resources.

Job Functions

  • Assist library users in locating and accessing materials.
  • Provide information and support on library services, resources, and policies.
  • Address inquiries and resolve issues related to library services.
  • Manage the circulation desk, including checking in and out library materials.
  • Maintain accurate records of borrowed and returned items.
  • Shelve and organize books, periodicals, and other materials according to library classification systems.
  • Conduct regular inventory checks to ensure materials are correctly shelved and in good condition.
  • Assist in the acquisition and cataloguing of new materials.
  • Assist users with the use of library computers, printers, scanners, and other equipment.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting for technical issues and escalate more complex problems as needed.
  • Support the use of the library’s online catalogue and electronic resources.
  • Promote library services and events through various communication channels.
  • Support the delivery of educational sessions on library resources and research skills.
  • Perform clerical duties such as data entry, filing, and photocopying.
  • Maintain an orderly and clean library environment.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports and statistical data on library usage.
  • Work collaboratively with other library staff to ensure efficient library operations.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the development of library services.
  • Engage in professional development activities to stay current with library practices and technologies


Required Skills or Experience

  • A minimum of a diploma in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree is an advantage.
  • Previous experience in a library or customer service role is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications, including MS Office Suite and library management systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • A customer-focused attitude and a commitment to providing high-quality service.

Terms of Appointment

  • The appointment shall be full-time.
