Job Description

TERMS OF REFERENCE
The “Landscapes and Environmental Agility across the Nation”- LEAN is a four-year project (from 2020-2024) funded by the European Union’s flagship GCCA+ initiative that aims to conserve biodiversity, build climate resilience, and reduce emissions from land-use changes in the savannah, high forest, and transition zones of Ghana—and all while helping local farmers to improve their livelihoods. In 2020, the project commenced and is being implemented by a consortium of four partners including the Rainforest Alliance (RA), Tropenbos Ghana (TBG), EcoCare Ghana (ECG), and World Vision Ghana (WVG) and working closely with the European Union (EU) Delegation, private sector, local communities, and core national partners, to catalyse systemic changes across the three-biodiversity significant and economically important landscapes to help translate the sustainability commitments into workable solutions on the ground. 
 
In the final year of implementation, the EU LEAN project seeks an individual or agency to serve as the EU LEAN Project Communications Consultant.
 
Consultancy summary
The Communications Consultant or consultancy firm will support the Rainforest Alliance and LEAN Consortium partners in completing the EU LEAN Project communication plan. They will also help the project map out and highlight the Most Significant Change (MSC) stories and help close out the project.
 
Tasks:  
The Communications Consultant is expected to implement the effective communication strategies outlined in the EU LEAN Communication Plan, together with the senior project manager and LEAN communications team, to build partner loyalty, project objective awareness, and donor satisfaction.
  • Plan and manage the design, content, and production of all communication and visibility materials for the EU LEAN Project.
  • Develop EU LEAN project’s promotional communication materials such as print-outs, pamphlets, and publications.
  • Create informative and exciting media releases, kits, newsletters, and project-related materials.
  • Create communication and visibility strategies for launches, events, and project campaigns.
  • Develop and consolidate relations with the media to position success stories or publications produced by the project. 
  • Monitor and follow up critical accounts of mass media or others related to project matters and reputational risk management in the country.
  • Follow up and manage social conversations related to the project work and impact in the country.
Product/Deliverables:
  • Six (6) news articles published by critical online news websites and national newspapers.
  • One (1) strategic media campaign organised to reach at least 1 million target audience within the landscapes/country/globally 
  • Four (4) audio-visual contents on the LEAN project produced
  • Four (4) educational materials on key aspects of the projects in collaboration with Project partners produced
Duration of Consultancy:
The Communication Consultant is expected to work six months, from June 2024 to December 2024.
 
Institutional Arrangements:
The Consultant will work closely with the Senior Project Manager, LEAN consortium partners, Rainforest Alliance colleagues, and the EU Program Officer throughout the process. The consultant will have access to project documentation, communication, and visibility plans. Rainforest Alliance’s Communication Manager, West and Central Africa, will be consulted for feedback and support on all communications activities. The Senior Project Manager will provide input, guidance, review, and approval during each stage of this consultancy.
 
General Terms and Conditions for Request for Proposal:
  • Proposals and any additional information received after the submission time and date are subject to rejection by The Rainforest Alliance. RA may reject incomplete proposals at its discretion. 
  • The Rainforest Alliance reserves the right to request additional information during the procurement process.
  • RA is at liberty to make multiple or no selections as part of the proposal process. RA also reserves the right to cancel the procurement.
  • All proposal costs shall be borne by the applicant and will not be reimbursed by RA.
Selection Criteria: 
A Combined Scoring method will be used. The Communication Proposal will be given a 70% weight, and the price offer in the detailed budget will be weighed at 30%. The Communication Proposal will be weighted as follows:
  • Quality of Communication Proposal submitted
  • Cost
  • Proven substantial experience and previous work done
  • Relevant technical certifications/expertise/tenure
  • Expressed ability and availability to commence work immediately 
  • Disclosure of conflict of interest

Required Skills or Experience

The Consultant or Consultant Firm should have the following qualifications:

  • Suitable qualification in communications, journalism, public relations, or relevant field.
  • Extensive experience implementing similar work, with at least five years’ exposure in the media landscape.
  • Must have excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office and Internet), data analysis, and management of websites/blogs and social media platforms.
  • Proven experience in creating targeted content is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of designing and producing audiovisual content.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent writer with knowledge of forests and biodiversity, conservation, agriculture, human rights, social inclusion, and value chain commodities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the RA mission and values.
