We work in close partnership with the Ghana Education Service to deliver a range of impactful training programmes to teachers and other relevant bodies of the agency.

Job Description

  • Department:  Advocacy 
  • Reports to:  Senior Advocacy and Policy Engagement Manager
  • Location:  Accra, with travels to other parts of the country
Job Purpose
The Senior Advocacy and Media Officer supports the design, management and implementation of Sabre Education’s advocacy and communications strategy with the objective of increasing the visibility and promoting the work and impact of Sabre in Ghana across local, national and pan-African platforms, targeting media, government stakeholders, civil society partners and the wider public.    
           
The Officer will play a key role in delivering local and national media engagement, producing on-the-ground communications materials (including print, radio, TV and offline content), and supporting event visibility. She/he will directly support the Advocacy Department and work closely with the Communications Team and other Units.
 
This is a fulltime position, and the role will require some travel to project locations in Ghana for Sabre Education related activities.
 
Key Responsibilities
Advocacy 
  • Support the development of advocacy strategy and implementation
  • Help conceptualise, coordinate and implement advocacy programmes
  • Engage policy makers and other relevant stakeholders, Sabre team members, and external partners in carrying out advocacy activities
  • Initiate and maintain strategic relations with civil servants working in all relevant agencies or departments relevant to Sabre’s work
  • Coordinate the advocacy activities with CSO’s, NGO’s and government partners  
  • Contribute to the production of any advocacy and communication materials including posters and reports in collaboration with the Communications Team      
  • Keep a calendar of key global and national events, and support the coordination of events 
  • Support the production of any documentation of advocacy activities that will be used for public engagement, visibility, and advocacy in collaboration with the Communications Team
  • Represent the organisation at meetings, coalitions, working groups, and public events
  • Support in monitoring relevant policy developments and political trends to inform advocacy tactics and positions.
Media Engagement and Communications Support
  • Develop media strategies and strengthen media relations to increase visibility of the organisation's work in Ghana
  • Prepare talking points and briefs for staff for media engagements and appearances
  • Draft and edit press releases, op-eds, feature stories etc 
  • Work with various teams to develop high-quality, targeted content for various platforms (print, digital, broadcast)
  • Support the production of communication materials including newsletters, videos, reports, website and social media content
  • Develop tools to track advocacy and media outcomes and measure impact 
  • Produce regular reports, updates, and briefings for internal and external stakeholders.     
  • Work closely with the Ghana and UK Communications teams to support the implementation of Sabre’s communications strategy in Ghana.
  • Identify and pitch media stories to media houses that align with Sabre’s advocacy goals and organisational priorities.
  • Contribute to strategic messaging around key campaigns, policy contributions, and Sabre’s various programmes 
  • Collaborate with MEL colleagues to document media and advocacy outcomes, supporting the development of quarterly and annual reports and strategic insights.     

Required Skills or Experience

Academic Qualifications and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies or a related field. A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience in media, advocacy, or communications. 
  • Experience working with NGOs, government agencies, or in the international development sector.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Ability to support local, national and international advocacy initiatives.
  • Ability to represent the organisation in a variety of fora
  • Strong contacts/links with major media houses in Ghana 
  • Strong understanding of Ghana’s education policy landscape and/or early childhood development context.
  • Ability to translate complex policy and education content into compelling media and public narratives.
  • Graphic design or multimedia production capabilities
  • Innovative, energetic, solution-oriented approach to work
  • Experience developing offline communications and materials for non-digital contexts (e.g. print collateral, radio, community events).
  • Ability to work independently on communications delivery in Ghana, while collaborating effectively with a remote UK-based digital team.
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) Outlook, Project-Management tools (Asana), Google Suite).
