Job Description

Job Purpose:

  • The Assistant Electrical Engineer is responsible for performing troubleshooting, preventive, scheduled and major repair maintenance on power plant electrical equipment and maintaining and repairing electrical equipment.

Key Activities:

  • Troubleshoots and maintains switchgears, circuit breakers, motors, programmable logic controllers, and transformers.
  • Diagnoses and repairs the cause of electric and electric systems control malfunctions of equipment such as transformers, relays, generator monitoring, control and excitation systems, medium and high voltage distribution systems and monitoring devices.
  • Performs (with assistance as needed) the maintenance of electrical equipment by cleaning, adjusting, tightening, performing preventive or corrective maintenance and identifying equipment in need of corrective maintenance. Writes, submits and clears corrective work orders for approval.
  • Properly uses electrical test equipment and other similar tools.
  • Perform routine generator, motor, electrical system test and inspections to the extent qualified and or supervise an outside contractor as required.
  • Perform 400V and medium voltage switchgear electrical systems maintenance (consistent with TGIOC electrical safety practices) and or supervise outside contractors in the performance of such work including the development of work scope.
  • Installs new electrical equipment as required.
  • Perform CMMS (Maximo) data entry and work order close-out in a thorough and timely fashion.
  • Perform electrical predictive data collection for transformer oil monitoring equipment (Hydran),generator Permanent Rotor insulation Monitoring System (PRIMS), Rotor Flux Monitoring (RFM) and Partial Discharge Analyser (PDA)
  • Interpret simplified electrical schematic diagrams, perform load checks and analyse results for new and revised circuits under investigation
  • Assist with performing Root Cause Analysis of failures on electrical related equipment
  • Properly rig and lift motors and other electrical equipment with overhead and mobile cranes.
  • Maintains records of electrical system modifications (including temporary lines and connections).
  • Investigates and prepares reports on unusual incidents involving equipment excursions and malfunctions.
  • Operate fork lifts, trucks and other plant vehicles Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • Carry out daily inspection of the Thermal Power Plant looking for defects and prepare reports.
  • Generate maintenance work orders and obtain permission from the Shift Charge Engineer to carry out maintenance and/or repairs on Plant and equipment to ensure uninterrupted functioning of Plant and equipment
  • Carry out planned preventive, running, predictive and/or breakdown maintenance so as to ensure efficient, effective, safe and uninterrupted functioning of the Thermal Plant and other equipment as well as safeguard the life span of the Plant   

Work Conditions & Requirements:

  • Physical requirements include standing for extended work periods and the use of stairways and ladders, and be able to lift weights of up to 25 kilograms.
  • Work with hazardous materials may also be required. The use of hardhats, safety glasses and shoes, hearing and respiratory protection and other Personal Protective Equipment may be required in the execution of some tasks.
  • Must be able to respond to visual, aural and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and is required to visually inspect work.
  • Standby duty may be required.
  • Must be able and willing to work any schedule including nights and weekends.

Required Skills or Experience

Essential:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or related subject with two (2) years’ experience in a similar role, in the power, mining and oil& gas industries. Experience in combined cycle power plant will be an advantage.
  • Must be able to read and understand complex electrical diagrams and technical manuals.
  • Demonstrates the ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, technical manuals, logic diagrams and P&ID's
  • Industrial, marine or utility training in control equipment associated with power generation.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and maintaining power plant electrical equipment such as AC and DC distribution systems; motor controls; motors; generators; building auxiliaries; and auxiliary equipment is mandatory.
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of electrical equipment which include but is not limited to gas turbine, steam turbine, generator, boiler, heat recovery steam generator, water treatment equipment, combustion and steam turbine electrical equipment, motor control centres, and all other balance of plant auxiliary electrical equipment.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record will be an advantage.
