Company Profile

Today, around one billion city-dwellers lack access to safe drinking water, a number the UN estimates will nearly double by 2050 as more and more people are moving to cities for work and other opportunities, most of them ending up living in informal settlements without basic services. Meanwhile the changing climate is making water even more precious. Against this backdrop, our work has never been more vital.

WSUP is a not-for-profit company, expert at improving water and sanitation services for low-income, urban communities. We work alongside utilities, entrepreneurs, and communities to develop and deliver solutions which are affordable for the poor, financially viable for suppliers, and sustainable for the environment.

We were founded in 2005 in the UK, and currently work in seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia (Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, Ghana, Zambia, Bangladesh), supported by a global Secretariat. We are a small organisation, but we have a big impact; since inception we have helped over 40 million people with improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services. And we have ambitions to reach many more www.wsup.com

WSUP’s innovative approach to creating impact is guided by our values, which are the common fundamental beliefs and principles that guide us. All our staff are expected to embody these values in their day-to-day work and interactions. To learn more about our values, please see www.wsup.com/about/work-with-us/.

Job Description

Introduction
Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) is a not-for-profit company which helps to transform cities to benefit the millions who lack access to water and sanitation. WSUP works side-by-side with local providers, strengthening the organizations that have been tasked to deliver city-wide services. We are a trusted partner to utilities, municipalities and the private sector, supporting them to develop services, build infrastructure and attract funding that will help them reach low-income urban communities (LIUCs).

Under this project, WSUP seeks to promote the role of Women in WASH in Ghana by strengthening gender and social inclusion in WASH sector leadership and decision-making.

Project Objective
To support gender inclusion in WASH sector leadership and decision-making by:

  1. Strengthening the WiWASH network through a program of organizational development and ensure that WiWASH members have the capacity and resources to mentor women in WASH, disseminate learning, influence and advocate from their own positions in the sector,
  2. Working with key national and community-based individuals, groups and organizations to identify how utilities can improve gender inclusion and contribute to the knowledge base of effective promotion of gender inclusion across the whole WASH system in Ghana
  3. Working with two national partners, to develop gender sensitive policies and procedures, and support staff members to implement and embed the recommended approaches in their organizations
  4. Engaging with wider key stakeholders to share best practice

In doing this we aim to facilitate:

  • A growing number of women in key decision-making roles in the WASH sector
  • More inclusive policies and procedures being developed and implemented across WASH institutions
