Job Description

CALL FOR CONSULTANT (S)– Training and Technical Support for the Production of Organic Pesticides, Fertilizer and Potash

ABOUT the Cocoa Hubs Project
The Cocoa Hubs Project is a collaborative initiative between Fairtrade Africa and Tropenbos Ghana, with the support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The project aims to transform existing Rural Service Centers (RSCs) into Cocoa Hubs, creating centralized platforms that will enhance the sustainability and profitability of cocoa farming in Ghana. Through the implementation of the project, it is expected that the hubs will serve as key pillars in improving the livelihood of cocoa farmers by providing essential services, training, and access to market opportunities.

By facilitating access to critical resources, the project will empower farmers to enhance their competitiveness, promote financial inclusion, and strengthen climate resilience.
Additionally, the Cocoa Hubs project will support value addition, efficient logistics, environmental sustainability, and land rehabilitation, fostering long-term growth and prosperity for cocoa communities.

ASSIGNMENT PURPOSE
The Cocoa Hubs Project is spearheading an initiative to promote sustainable agriculture through the local production and distribution of organic inputs. This effort aligns with the project's broader goal of strengthening the capacity of Six Rural Service Centres (RSCs) to deliver environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions to smallholder cocoa farmers.

Key Focus Areas
The initiative will focus on building the technical and operational capacity of RSCs to produce and manage:
  • Organic pesticides (plant-based, eco-friendly formulations)
  • Organic fertilizers (both liquid and granular forms)
  • Cocoa potash (produced from cocoa pod husks and other biomass)
Consultant Role and Scope
To support the successful implementation of this initiative, the project seeks to engage a qualified technical consultant with expertise in organic input production.

The consultant will be responsible for:
  • Designing and delivering hands-on training for RSC staff and local actors
  • Supporting the setup and operationalization of input production units at selected RSCs
  • Providing technical guidance on formulation, quality control, safety, and usage of the products
  • Developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and user-friendly manuals
  • Offering ongoing advisory support during the pilot production phase
This assignment is critical in laying the foundation for a scalable model of local organic input production, aimed at improving soil health, reducing dependence on synthetic chemicals, and enhancing the resilience and profitability of cocoa farming systems.

SCOPE OF WORK
The selected consultant will be responsible for supporting the Cocoa Hubs Project in building the capacity of Rural Service Centres (RSCs) to produce and manage organic agricultural inputs. Specific tasks will include:
  • Assess existing practices and production processes at selected RSCs to identify capacity gaps and areas for improvement.
  • Design and deliver hands-on training modules for RSC staff on:
              a. Formulation and application of organic pesticides using locally available materials
              b. Production of organic liquid and solid (granular) fertilizers
              c. Production and processing of cocoa potash from cocoa pod husks
  • Recommend and support the installation of appropriate tools and equipment for small-scale input production.
  • Develop easy-to-use operational manuals and safety protocols to guide production and usage.
  • Advise on quality control measures and ensure compliance with relevant local or national regulatory standards.
  • Provide technical guidance on the appropriate use and application of the organic inputs by farmers.
  • Prepare a final technical report, summarizing activities, outcomes, recommendations, and an action plan for scaling and sustainability.
SPECIFIC RESULTS
The Consultant(s) will be expected to provide the following deliverables:
1. Inception Report – A detailed work plan outlining methodology, timelines, and key activities, to be submitted within the first five (5) working days of the assignment.
2. Training Modules and Materials – Comprehensive, user-friendly training materials covering each of the following product categories:
  • Organic pesticides

3. On-Site Training Sessions – Delivery of practical, on-site training at selected Rural Service Centre (RSC) locations.
4. Operational Manuals and Safety Guidelines – Simple, illustrated manuals and protocols to guide RSCs in the safe production and application of organic inputs.
5. Final Technical Report – A conclusive report capturing activities undertaken, key outcomes, lessons learned, and recommendations for scaling and sustainability.
