Job Summary
The Cutter is responsible for accurately interpreting cutting instructions, laying and cutting fabric for the production of Gents, Ladies and Kids as per production requirements, and ensuring fabric utilization efficiency and minimal wastage. This role is critical to the start of the garment manufacturing process and requires a strong understanding of production workflows, industrial engineering principles, quality standards, and efficient team coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fabric Cutting & Planning:
- Interpret markers, patterns, and production orders to prepare cutting plans.
- Lay fabric efficiently, taking into consideration pattern direction, grain, and defects.
- Execute precise cutting of fabric using manual or automated cutting machines (straight knife, band knife, rotary cutters, etc.).
- Optimize fabric usage through effective marker planning and minimize waste.
- Maintain cut order plans and fabric usage reports.
- Production & Line Coordination:
- Collaborate with production planners to align cutting schedules with sewing line requirements.
- Ensure timely delivery of cut panels to sewing lines to prevent production delays.
- Monitor daily cut output and identify bottlenecks for improvement.
- Industrial Engineering & Efficiency:
- Work with industrial engineers to implement lean cutting methods and improve process efficiency.
- Participate in time-motion studies and contribute to layout optimization of the cutting room.
- Ensure compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and best practices.
- Total Quality Management (TQM):
- Inspect fabrics prior to cutting for defects or shading issues.
- Ensure adherence to quality standards in every cutting batch to reduce defects and rework.
- Participate in root cause analysis of quality issues related to cutting and propose preventive measure
- Maintain accurate cutting records and quality logs for traceability
- People & Safety Management:
- Supervise cutting assistants/helpers and ensure safety standards are upheld in the cutting room.
- Train and guide team members in handling cutting equipment and tools safely.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Fabric utilization percentage
- Daily cutting output (vs. target)
- Cutting accuracy/error rate
- Number of quality defects attributable to cutting
- On-time delivery to sewing lines
Required Skills or Experience
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong technical understanding of fabric properties and garment construction.
- Proficiency in marker making (manual or software-based e.g., Gerber, Lectra).
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing, 5S, and Kaizen principles.
- Good leadership and team coordination abilities.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum of a Diploma or NVTI in Garment Technology, Fashion Design, or related technical field.
- 3+ years of experience in a cutting role in a garment or apparel production environment.
- Exposure to industrial engineering, TQM, and production line processes is essential.
- Familiarity with ERP or manufacturing software is an advantage.
