Job Description

Are you passionate about improving crop production, plant study, soil science and its management, analyzing data to provide expert advice to farmers to optimize yields and promote sustainable farming practices? We are seeking an experienced and dynamic young professional to serve as an Agronomist.

JOB PURPOSE
In this role, the Agronomist will be responsible for specializing in soil and crop management to optimize plant growth, improve crop yields, and promote sustainable farming practices. The applicant must apply scientific principles to enhance agricultural production while minimizing environmental impact.
 
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyze soil composition, drainage, and fertility, and develop strategies for improving soil health.
  • Plan and manage crop planting, growth, and harvesting, including selecting appropriate crop varieties and optimizing planting schedules.
  • Develop and implement strategies for controlling pests and diseases while minimizing the use of harmful chemicals.
  • Recommend appropriate fertilizer applications based on soil and plant needs, promoting efficient nutrients use and minimizing environmental pollution.
  • Conduct research on crop varieties, agricultural practices, and new technologies to improve crop production and sustainability.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to farmers, out-grower scheme members and agricultural businesses on various aspects of crop production.
  • Collect and analyze data on crop performance, soil conditions, and environmental factors to inform decision-making and improve practices.
  • Train farmers and agricultural workers on best practices for sustainable farming, soil conservation, and environmental stewardship.
  • Prepare detailed report and present findings to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with researchers, government agencies and agribusiness to improve agricultural outcomes.
  • Stay abreast with advancements in agricultural technology and integrate them into farming practices.

Required Skills or Experience

RELEVANT EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in General Agriculture Science or a related field. 
  • Master’s degree in either Agriculture Science, Agronomy, Crop Science or related field will be an advantage.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years relevant work experience as an Agronomist or in a similar role.
  • Excellent understanding of soil composition, fertility, and good agricultural practices.
  • Knowledge of planting, growth, and harvesting techniques for various crops. 
  • Good knowledge of crop production, soil chemistry and pest management.
  • Knowledge in identifying pests and diseases, and developing appropriate control strategies that minimize environmental impact.
  • Knowledge of irrigation techniques, drainage, and water conservation.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to crop production, soil conditions, and other relevant factors.
  • Understanding fertilizer types, application methods, and their impact on crop yields and the environment.
  • Familiarity with modern agricultural technologies, including precision farming tools and data management systems.
  • Ability to diagnose issues with crops and develop effective and sustainable solutions.
  • Ability to Analyze information, evaluate options, and make sound decisions.
  • Build relationship with farmers and clients, understand their needs, and work collaboratively with other professionals.
  • Experience with agricultural software, GIS tools and precision farming technologies.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good Communications skills.
  • Integrated Pest Management skills.
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel and work in field conditions.
