Pencils of Promise is a non-profit organization that builds schools and increases educational opportunities in the developing world. Pencils of Promise was founded by Adam Braun. Since its founding in October 2008, the 501 organization has built 554 schools across Laos, Guatemala and Ghana. 

Job Description

Summary of Position
The People and Culture Coordinator will work closely with the Management team to ensure that Pencils of Promise's (PoP) HR practices are aligned to PoP’s mission and core values, compliant with prevailing legislation and requirements to facilitate the achievement of the objectives and targets of the organization. The role will also support the administrative functions of the Ghana office. A successful candidate should have strong administration and people management skills and must possess excellent communication and writing skills.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop, update and implement HR policies, procedures, systems, and structures that promote equal opportunity, trust, and confidence among staff and enable management to manage and motivate staff as well as be the custodian of such policies and procedures
  • Develop and update efficient & effective human resource management systems that support the design and implementation of quality programming in schools without compromising compliance
  • Champion gender equality, diversity, initiatives, and staff wellness
  • Support management to promote a positive work environment
  • Coordinate recruitment and hiring processes in collaboration with Management: Assist Managers with shortlisting, interviewing, conducting, and analyses of exit interviews
  • Spearhead staff appraisal activities of the country office
  • Work with Management to ensure that staff JDs are updated where necessary
  • Coordinate staff performance management programs
  • Conduct surveys and analyze responses on specific research needs
  • Support management to manage staff grievances and discipline issues in line with the HR policies and the Labour Law
  • Promote corporate work ethics and values within the organization
  • Assess training needs of staff and provide recommendations for training to management
  • Coordinate professional development training for staff
  • Ensure adherence to staff income tax and pension contribution payments
  • Manage PoP Ghana Child Protection desk
  • Perform other related duties as required

Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management/Organizational Behavior/or related field
  • Conversant with Human Resource Information Systems
  • Vast knowledge of Human Resource procedures and systems
  • Experience in a similar role with an NGO is preferred
  • Substantial knowledge of Ghana’s Labour Law
  • Knowledge and understanding of HR issues related to Gender, Equality, Diversity, and Child Protection 
  • Experience in data collection and analyses
  • Capability to relate and work effectively across culture, more specifically the appreciation of the Ghanaian culture
  • Strong commitment to PoP’s values
  • A strong leader with the ability to motivate and inspire the team to achieve the superior standard in all aspects of human resource management
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Languages

  • Strong skills in written and spoken English
  • The ability to speak Ewe, Twi, and Dangbe is an added advantage
